I think we can all agree that 2020 was not what any of us expected. Going into 2020, on New Year's Eve 2019, I remember how hopeful everyone was and the jokes about the year having 20/20 vision.

Now things are quite the opposite- we were blinded, people are extremely pessimistic and honestly, I can't say I blame them. As a student, my classes have become a lot harder and less manageable. Although I don't think things will completely change come the new year, I have hope that I can do more to make it easier to handle.

I plan to do this by setting these New Year's Resolutions/Goals for myself. It's not the "new year, new me" schtick, but it'll work nonetheless.

I will organize my school and work agenda more thoroughly.

This means keeping my agenda neat and updated. I feel like this is the first step to making better grades and performing better in school.

I will communicate with the university and staff when I need help.

All universities want their students to succeed. Taking advantage of the health services is part of what you're paying for as a student.

I will make time to take care of myself.

Whatever your love language is you should use it to treat yourself as well as others. For example, if your love language is gifts buy yourself a meal from your favorite restaurant (even if it's out of the budget) every once in a while. If its words of affirmations tell yourself some nice things or write affirmations on your bathroom mirror.

I will get involved in my community and not let myself become isolated.

This was a major problem I came in contact with this semester. It is easy to become isolated with online classes. Trying something new or joining an organization is an easy way to overcome this.

I will find healthy outlets for my stress and anxieties.

Whether it's friends or family or an activity finding an outlet for stress can be a game changer.

I hope you use these as your new years resolutions and keep a better mindset for 2021!

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
