Everyone has those moments when they are down and just can't be bothered. Where you lay and bed and think "Can I just stop being me?" When you can't move because the sadness has taken control of your body, so you can't sleep. Can you imagine having to face that everyday? People who battle certain mental health disorders do. Mental Health Awareness day recently passed, and I don't think that it did any justice. People are still unconcerned and unaware, so here are a few, not all, mental health disorders.
1. Anxiety
Anxiety is one of the most common disorders. Plenty of people get occasional anxiety when it comes to school and their jobs, but they power through it to get what they need to get done. Others, the ones who have an actual disorder, have to take medication to control it. Even then their anxiety can be so crippling that they can't function in their everyday lives.
2. Depression
Depression is the second most common disorder. This, like anxiety, will affect almost everyone every once in a while, but there are people who face it most days of their lives. There are quite a few types of depression, but they all affect people about the same. Depression is a disorder that affects people's thoughts, moods, and activities. Depression has a lot of symptoms such as irritability, loss of appetite, decreased energy, extreme fatigue, thoughts of suicide and feelings of guilt. This disorder can also make it hard for people to live normal lives.
3. Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder is one of the most common mood disorders that affect people. It is easy to keep under control if you take your medication, but sometimes those pills will leave you drained and not feeling like yourself. Bipolar disorder is a brain disorder that affects a person's mood. It is a disorder is that is classified by extreme high moods and extreme low moods with no middle ground. Some symptoms of the high moods include having a lot of energy, having increased activity levels, talking fast and trouble sleeping. Some symptoms of low moods include feeling depressed, forgetting things, eating too much or too little, feeling worried and feeling empty.
4. Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia is a disorder that can extremely affect the functioning ability of people to an extent that can make them hospitalized for the rest of their lives. It is a rare disorder, but not extremely rare, that affects how people think. It can make it hard for people to tell the difference between what's real and what's not. Some symptoms of schizophrenia include delusions, hallucinations, hearing voices, strange behavior, a feeling of being detached and disorganized behavior.
These are just a few mental health disorders that affect a plethora of people throughout the world. There are a lot more, but they are not as common as these four. Plenty of people suffer through these disorders, but there is barely any type of awareness raised for people who suffer through anything except for anxiety and depression. This lack of awareness makes it hard for people to get the help they need because they do not know they need to get help. So, this needs to end, and more awareness needs to be raised for mental health disorders.
