May is a month of liveliness and renewal. May is for tequila shots and celebrating Cinco de Mayo. May is the time to frantically search for the perfect Mother's Day gift. May is a month spent eagerly awaiting Memorial Day Weekend.
But May is so much more.
May is observed as Mental Health Awareness Month, yet so many among us tend to overlook this significant dedication, instead immersing themselves in May's other events; others are completely unaware of it. Issues that affect so many are so mind-blowingly disregarded.
Depression, anxiety and eating disorders are just a few of the mental illnesses that affect millions.
Those who are depressed are not merely sad. Anxiety does not feel the same as nervousness. Eating disorders are not attention seeking mechanisms.
Though our society has made notable progress in establishing the seriousness, reality and prevalence of mental health, there are still many who belittle and demean it.
Take this month to educate yourself. Chances are someone you love is affected by his or her mental health whether you are aware of it or not.
Though May is coming to an end, mental health awareness can and should continue being spread.
Talk about it.
It's time we stop pretending there are no such things as mental health struggles. If someone you know is in need of help, make sure they receive it.
Share your story.
A mental health journey is nothing to be ashamed of. It's time we break stigmas encourage others to do the same.
This month and moving forward, remember the importance of mental health. There is always something you can do to spread awareness and there is always someone you can help.
