June 13-19 is National Men's Health Week, and although I am not a man, I know and care about many and want us all to be conscientious about our health.

Beginning in 1994, Men's Health Week has been celebrated the week before and including Father's Day each year. The purpose of this week is pretty self explanatory -- to promote a healthy lifestyle, encourage early detection of disease and educate about preventable health issues in boys and men.

Take a second to think about your own health, male or female, and then think about the health of those that you love. What did you see? Good, bad, in the middle, needs improvement? Well here's a news flash, it will not get better if you don't try to do something about it.

Most of the time our first though when we hear "health" is the idea of physical health, and that is primarily what this week is promoting. However I would like to remind you all that our overall health is so much more than just that. Our social health and emotional health should always be acknowledged and considered when thinking about our health.

Although this week is specifically about the men in the world, I challenge you all to take a step back and think of how healthy your body really is.

Here's some things to look at:

1. Sleep

Our body's way to repair and refuel; are you getting enough, or maybe even too much? It is recommended that adults get between 7 and 9 hours of sleep a night, and the quality of that sleep is important too. Do you sleep with your T.V. on or have other distractions in the room that may disrupt your sleep? Take a look at your habits and try to give your body the best rest that you can.

2. Exercise

We all know we need it, but how many of us actually make that 60 minutes of physical activity a priority? I know life gets busy, but try to do something physical whenever you can. Go for a walk on your lunch break, do something outside, find something that you enjoy that also helps you stay active.

3. Eating healthy

This can also be very difficult to do, I know the dilemma when that ice cream is just calling your name. We're talking about more than just your snacking habits though. Try to cut down the processed foods, and especially the fast food, all day every day. Add more fruits and vegetables to your diet and do some research on what your portions should be for your daily meals. Also we all need to drink more water. Our bodies are around 60% water, and the health benefits from simply drinking more are endless.

4. Making healthy decisions-

We have all heard the health risks that come with tobacco, alcohol and drug use, so think of your body when making those choices. Also, support those who might have a difficult time quitting. There are so many programs and support systems out there, you just have to find and utilize them and not give up.

5. Paying attention to your body-

Keep up with yearly physicals and do not hesitate to bring up something that just doesn't seem right. Utilize your doctors and help them to help your body. Early detection and treatment is key -- protect your body and be its voice.

Now let's all go out and try to maintain a healthy lifestyle and support the same for others!

Ten Truths Every Honors Student Knows

One of the main reasons I came to Salem State was I was offered a spot in the honors program. While it offered many benefits, scholarships and priority registration to name a few, what drew me in was the strong sense of community and close knit friendships many found. I am glad to say that that I did find these things, and so much more. I found a home made up of some of the most brilliant and most unique people I have ever met. Being in an honors program creates a college experience unlike any other and creates some universal truths that really only an honors student can fully understand.

8 Things I Realized After My First Semester In College

The first semester of college is famous for being one of the most difficult transitions of one's young adult life. You're thrown into a completely new area where the majority of the people surrounding you are strangers in an academic environment that's much more challenging then what you've grown accustomed to for the past twelve years. On top of that, you probably share a room with another person (or even multiple people) on the lumpiest "mattress" you've ever slept on.

With this change comes a lot of questions: what do I want to major in? What am I passionate about? Is what I'm passionate about something I'm actually good at? Why does the bathroom smell like cranberry juice and vodka? What is that thing at the bottom of the shower drain?
