November: Men's Health Awareness Month

In light of the topic of November, there is a deeper meaning to ‘No Shave November’ than just refusing to shave ‘cause it’s cold out, and a deeper meaning for me on a personal level. November is the month that is dedicated to men’s health.

The Movember Foundation is the leading global organization committed to changing the face of men’s health. Combining the words ‘moustache’ and ‘November’ and a fundraiser that involves men growing out their moustaches to raise money in honor of bringing awareness to men’s health, ‘Movember’ has been created. The importance of this month and bringing awareness to men’s health hits home for me.

I am very fortunate to have all four of my grandparents still in my life. In the past year, both of my grandfathers have experienced some major health issues. My grandfather on my mom’s side is strong, brave, and so, so loving. As a University of Dayton football alum, my grandfather grew up exercising, but smoked cigarettes for many years. While this is not his lifestyle anymore, and for the better, he is always tired, and takes many different types of pills everyday to help improve his health.

My grandfather, Poppy Chuck, has had to go through several heart procedures including open heart surgery. He is a fighter, and his brave soul and tremendously caring spirit keeps him kicking. Our family provides one big support group that makes his face light up. So grateful for his grandchildren, we love him very much and want to see him healthy.

My grandfather on my dad’s side was diagnosed with colorectal cancer this past summer. A couple years ago, he underwent double bypass surgery as well. These came as a surprise to me because he has always taken great care of himself. Always working out, going golfing, eating right, and dressing to the nines. I could never understand how someone can take such good care of themselves and their family and still have to go through these scary times that majorly affect their health. My grandfather, Pop Pop, is one of the strongest men I know. He is fighting like crazy to follow the doctor’s orders and continues to love and care for others despite his pain. It’s hard to see him out of sorts and not his typical self, but I am grateful that he does take such good care of himself, which allowed the doctors to catch his cancer in time.

So thank you November, for being the month that brings awareness to men’s health. Even though my grandfathers may not be healthy right now, they are still a part of my life on this Earth. Whether a grandfather, father, uncle, husband, or brother, it is important to take care of your health because there is a girl and hundreds of people out there that love you.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
