For many Americans across the country, Memorial Day is a long weekend filled with burgers, beer, and barbecue. As the weather warms up and the bright, summery colors take over, it's the perfect opportunity to enjoy the outdoors. Just keep in mind that this Monday off isn't just because federal workers wanted a break.
Memorial day is a special time to remember and honor those that served for our country and made the ultimate sacrifice. This holiday started in 1971 after the American Civil War, but it is meant for soldiers that lost their lives in any war.
Dedicating your life to fighting in an attempt to better the lives of all the people in your country is one of the most selfless and noble careers anyone could take on. The amount of time and work soldiers put in before traveling is already quite substantial, and the level of dedication only increases as you move up the ranks. Unfortunately, many American lives have been lost in battle over the decades as all of these proud citizens fight for what they believe in. All the sacrifices made by these people can never be repaid, and a day of remembrance seems miniscule in comparison to all these citizens have done, but it is a start.
If your family has lost loved ones, reflect on the time you were able to spend with them and appreciate their time spent overseas fighting for the entirety of their country. Maybe go visit their burial spot, take them flowers, and reminisce by telling stories and recalling fond memories.
If you have not suffered the loss of a loved one from fighting, consider all the privileges we have and take for granted that are a result of the freedoms gained by fighting all these battles.
Enjoy the day and the beautiful weather, but don't forget to remember the meaning behind this holiday and appreciate all the loved ones lost across the nation fighting so you can have the wonderful life you've been given.
