There's something about the way Michelle Obama speaks that inspires me to achieve my wildest dreams, even if it may be difficult. She has this ability to capture your attention when speaking about subjects that are important to her. Michelle has shown time and again that she takes pride and passion in her beliefs. As I expected, her speech at the DNC in Philadelphia was nothing short of amazing. Although I usually try not to involve myself with politics, her speech inspired me to share some of the key points she made.
1. "When they go low, we go high"
In Michelle's words, this quote is a motto she has taught her own daughters; when someone acts like a bully, don't stoop to their level. That the hateful language we hear everyday on TV from public figures is not a true representation of the spirit of this country. Unfortunately there is no way to escape that hateful language, but we should always remember that love trumps hate.
2. "We know that our words and actions matter"
Because both Michelle and Barack are living in the spotlight, their words and actions really matter. Everyone pays attention to every little detail of pretty much anything they say. While no one is perfect, we should try our best to carry ourselves in a way that reflects our true character- and that begins with the way we speak and behave.
3. "The issues a president faces cannot be boiled down to 140 characters"
Being president is probably the hardest job anyone could ever have. To have the entire country in your hands, with every decision you make deciding the fate of America is not easy. I truly hope that whoever becomes the next president is ready to handle these challenges. It's up to us to choose a president who will have our country's best interest at heart.
4. "Don't let anyone ever tell you that this country isn't great, that somehow we need to make it great again. Because this, right now, is the greatest country on earth."
While America has its flaws, Michelle has a point. I personally think that while America truly is great, maybe the next president could make it even greater. Who knows what will happen, but regardless, America is still a great country and we should be proud of that.
5. "In this election, we cannot sit back and hope that everything works out for the best."
When Obama first ran for president, I was not old enough to vote. But back then I felt a little trust in the rest of the country to pick a president that would be best for us. Today, I have never felt more encouraged to exercise my right to vote. I feel as if I have an important say in the outcome. And that's why I feel I can't sit back and hope that everything will work out regardless if I didn't vote or not.
If you are old enough, I strongly encourage you to exercise that right. Believe it or not, you have a say in the future of this country. In true Hunger Games fashion, may the odds be ever in our favor.
