Memes, Today's Social Commentary

Memes are the modern-day tabloids.

If you scroll around on the Internet for long enough, you will inevitably come across a meme. “But what exactly is a meme?”, you might ask. In all honesty it’s kind of hard to explain, but it essentially boils down to a themed image relaying the author’s opinion on something or another (or just to get a laugh). And as this is the Internet, there are a LOT of opinions floating around, and consequently a lot of memes to express them. What you’re about to see is but a small taste of meme culture. For example…

There are memes for being condescending...

Memes for confusion...

Memes to express impatience....

And memes that are played just for laughs.

Essentially, if there's a thought for it, there's a meme for it. Memes are today's social commentary on everything from daily struggles to major events, from people’s escapades to future endeavors. And as we live in the age of celebrity near-worship, of course the stars have not been left unscathed either. Need I remind you of McKayla Maroney from the 2012 Olympics?

Seeing a golden opportunity, the Internet pounced and we were graced with a torrent of "umimpressed McKayla" memes.

The meme even became so popular that it reached the White House! Don't believe me? See for yourself!

Speaking of the White House, President Obama himself is the subject of more than one meme, as his occupation calls for constantly being monitored and photographed. This gives the Internet plenty of chances to be crafty and clever.

Michael Jordan crying, Steve Harvey's fumble during the Miss Universe pageant, Michael Phelps' angry face at the Rio Olympics.... All of the things they've done has given people a chance to use them as commentary to express what they think in a hilarious way.

But in the way of commentary, perhaps there is no other topic that sparks it like politics. Given how turbulent this year's election is already, and if people on the internet attack something as simple as a slip of the tongue, of course they eat the presidential race up! It's like attracting bears to a beehive.

The point here is that now since we have the power in this age of technology, that everyone has the ability to express what they think and have it shared more than ever before. It just so happens that, somehow, it manifested itself into something utterly hilarious. Just don't take these memes too seriously and enjoy others’ sense of humor. It may not be a five-hundred-page article about why their opinion is correct, but that’s not always a bad thing. Memes are just a small way to brighten someone’s day, and we could all use a good laugh now and then.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever.
