"I Really Don't Care. Do U?"
First Lady Melania Trump wore this tone-deaf message on the back of her bomber jacket today as she left to visit migrant children detained after illegally crossing the U.S. border.

Yes, Melania, some of us DO care about these separated children.
These children, harmful, helpless children, are being torn away from their families. Families that wanted to leave their country to come here, to the United States, because they wanted a better life. They want to provide more opportunities for their children. They want them to grow and prosper in a developed country where they're supposed to have more freedom and more room to be something.
The United States is a country full of immigrants. It became a country because of immigrants. None of us are "true" Americans unless you are Native American. In a previous Odyssey article, I touched on just how costly and timely it is to even become a citizen in the United States.
These children — children — are being taken from their parents, from their families, because this country has, apparently, no better solution to this issue.
Instead of figuring out why there are people coming in illegally, the government would rather ban an entire group of people from entering unless they want to wait years to become a citizen. We have to ask why there are people coming here illegally. What are the issues, what are the reasons? How can we solve those?
A wall is not a solution. Separation is not a solution. ICE should do better. President Trump should do better. We should speak out, and the immigrants should be heard.
This isn't a political issue. This isn't a party issue. This is a humanity issue. This is a morality issue. Right now, America is proving to other countries that we are not humane and that we do not care about morals. That we do not want to open our country and actually try to help those who want in. That we don't care about these humans.
But yes, some of us do care. And we are the ones that have to stand together and fight for those who cannot.
Melania, in this time of desperate need, do not forget where your family came from. Hear the cries of help from these immigrants.
