Melania Mania: What's The Deal With This Potential First Lady?

Last week Melania Trump, mysterious wife of presidential candidate Donald Trump, was the subject of intense scrutiny when she plagiarized a large part of her speech at the Republican National Convention from Michelle Obama’s 2008 speech at the Democratic National Convention.

Previous to this incident Melania Trump had been surprisingly absent from her husband’s campaign. She spent much of her time tucked away in their apartment in New York. The role of supportive and advising wife has been taken over, at least publicly, by Ivanka, Trump's daughter.

In an interview with Matt Lauer just before taking the stage at the RNC, Melania stated that she had written the speech she was about to give with as little help as possible. After the plagiarism was noted Meredith McIver, a former ballerina and writer for the Trumps, took the blame for the mistake. In her statement she said, "In working with Melania Trump on her recent First Lady speech, we discussed many people who inspired her and messages she wanted to share with the American People. A person she has always liked is Michelle Obama." The statement goes on to say that the phrasing was not checked for similarities before the final speech was cleared. Make of this what you may. This incident is drawing attention to the previously neglected member of the Trump family. What do we really know about Melania Trump and the kind of First Lady she would be?

Melania’s website gives a brief history of Trump’s life along with promoting her beauty and jewelry lines. For those of you who don’t know, Melania is Slovenian, which is evident in her thick accent. She moved to New York in 1996. She soon after met Donald Trump and they began dating. In a famous anecdote, which has been repeatedly used in interviews and profiles of Melania, she says that she met Trump at the Kit Kat Club in 1998. Donald arrived with another woman and tried to get Melania’s number while his date was in the bathroom. Melania refused and instead asked for his number so that he would have to wait on a call from her. The anecdote has been used in many articles, the critical GQ profile, and Du Jour’s recent piece.

Now that you know a little bit about Melania, I want to get to the point of this article. Melania could be our next first lady. Who would she resemble? Perhaps the French's Carla Bruni Sarkozy. Her competition? Bill Clinton, who's much less of an unknown than Melania, is the former president and husband to Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. While she clearly admires our current First Lady Michelle Obama, as she used part of Obama’s speech, she has stated she would be a very traditional First Lady, unlike Michelle. So let’s compare and contrast.

Melania has been very vague about her position on almost every issue except for immigration. On immigration, she sides completely with her husband. In an MSNBC interview, Melania says she followed the law when immigrating and that her husband is only talking about illegal immigrants. Melania immigrated on a H-1B program like many models or scientists who are considered “highly skilled workers” and therefore are not required to show proof of a college degree.

According to the New Yorker, Trump doesn’t approve of the abuse of the H-1B program stating, “The H-1B program is neither high-skilled nor immigration: these are temporary foreign workers, imported from abroad, for the explicit purpose of substituting for American workers at lower pay.” However, that is how Melania, his wife, entered the country. The proof of a college degree would have been hard for Melania due to the fact that the university in Ljubljana, Slovenia which Trump says she received a degree in design and architecture from has no record of her graduating.

Various profiles on Melania are all pretty similar as far as facts go. Du Jour , GQ, and the New Yorker all cover pretty much the same information. They all state controversial facts like, Melania’s father is only 5 years older than Trump, Melania’s has a hidden half-brother that no one in the family speaks to, the Clinton’s didn’t send a wedding gift to the Trumps, and so on.

Melania has had a very successful career as a model and designer. As a First Lady, Trump says she will be very traditional like “Jackie Kennedy or Betty Ford.” However, neither of these first ladies were traditional. Betty Ford was outspoken on the Equal Rights Amendment. She was Pro-choice and spoke openly about her breast cancer. Jackie Kennedy transformed the White House into the iconic place that it is today. She was a great patron of the arts and traveled with her husband as much as possible. These First Ladies were nowhere near traditional in their time and First Ladies since them have followed their lead but few have made as many changes in the role of the First Lady as Kennedy and Ford. When Trump says traditional, I doubt these two game changers are what she really meant. She believes her place is in the home with her son. This belief has made Ivanka Trump her father’s de facto spouse during the campaign which puts Melania’s potential role as First Lady into question.

Let’s compare Melania’s secrecy and traditionalism to Michelle Obama. Michelle is a lawyer and

has earned degrees from both Princeton and Harvard. She has a history in public service as the assistant commissioner of planning and development for the City of Chicago. She has taken on many worthy causes as the first lady. She spearheaded a health movement in schools and has campaigned for women’s rights. The Obamas are a very traditional first family with and inspirational marriage. Michelle is no stranger to controversy, though. Her arms sparked national controversy, the recent lack of a head covering in Saudi Arabia has been highly controversial, the PDA that the Obamas display as a married couple is controversial. Fashion controversies will not be a problem for Melania who has always been fashion forward and knows her way around the industry. Money also shouldn’t be a problem because everyone expects opulence and extravagance from the Trumps. (This is a problem the Obamas are continually facing scrutiny for. The cost of Malia and Sasha Obama's gowns for a recent event made headlines.)

The real question is will Melania face any of this controversy? The answer, probably not. The media realizes that Melania never wanted to be a politician’s wife. She has no political tendencies herself and will probably continue to live her life the same way she has been. She will most likely continue supporting the same charities and continue to focus on being a parent to her son. Melania is not the most conservative person. Many believe she's had plastic surgery which she denies. And who can forget all the racy photos from her modeling days? The most talked about is a naked Melania laying on a fur throw on the cover of GQ in January of 2000. A first lady hasn't been so controversial and risqué in quite a long time.

Yet the statement made in Du Jour magazine seems to say it all in the Obama/ Trump comparison. “If Michelle Obama is everyone’s favorite Cool Mom—you know, the one with the toned arms and the perfect J.Crew outfit—Melania is seen as the Queen Bee, the helicopter mom with her own helicopter.”

The best, most similar presidential spouse to Melania is outstandingly Carla Bruni Sarkozy, wife of former French president Nicolas Sarkozy. Sarkozy was an actor, singer, and model. She was famous for her controversial private life. She dated Mick Jagger and even Donald Trump for a short time. Then she dated a Raphael Enthoven a married philosophy professor, with whom she has a child. After ending her relationship with Enthoven in 2007 Sarkozy began dating Nicolas, the newly elected French president. They married in 2008. Carla like Melania has been accused of having plastic surgery. The Sarkozy's relationship has been controversial due to the fact that Carla is quite liberal while Nicholas’s policies are conservative. Sarkozy is a major patron of the arts and supports various charities as France’s “first lady.”

Former President Bill Clinton is potentially the first “First Husband.” Clinton, as a former president, would make an amazing first husband. He would be able to advise Hillary on policy, promote various charities, and help with foreign policy. He's experienced in the philanthropic sense. He also is accustomed to the stress it puts on a person to be the President of the United States. He would know the kind of support and help Hillary would need throughout her presidency. While the Clinton's relationship may not have the best track record they have a beautiful family and it seems as though they've moved past Bill's previous indiscretions. There's also no precedent for what Clinton would do as "First Husband" because he would be the first. Would he follow in former First Lady's leads and do as First Ladies do?

Melania is a big unknown. She speaks in generalities and hasn't given her opinion on Trump's policies. She doesn't seem too interested in being the first lady. Even being a traditional first lady has its downsides and how traditional could she be with her risqué past? Instead of having her own life and pursuing her own passions it seems like Melania is resigned to only being a mother. While there's nothing wrong with being a stay at home mom as a private citizen, being the First Lady requires more. It's quite unfortunate that Melania would have to follow Michelle because in my opinion Michelle Obama is one of the best First Ladies we've had in a long time. While Melania's life mirrors Carla Sarkozy's, there's really no mold for who Melania would be as a First Lady. With the little we've seen and heard from her so far and what we have heard going so terribly wrong, the uncertainty of Melania's actions as a First Lady are nerve-wracking, at best.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!

There is nothing quite like family.

Family is kinda like that one ex that you always find yourself running back to (except without all the regret and the angsty breakup texts that come along with it).

No matter how long your class is, there's always time for the mind to wander. Much like taking a shower or trying to fall asleep, sitting in a classroom can be a time when you get some of your best ideas. But, more than likely, you're probably just trying to mentally cope with listening to a boring lecturer drone on and on. Perhaps some of the following Aristotle-esque thoughts have popped into your head during class.

Bob's Burgers is arguably one of the best and most well-written shows on tv today. That, and it's just plain hilarious. From Louise's crazy antics to Tina's deadpan self-confidence, whether they are planning ways to take over school or craft better burgers, the Belchers know how to have fun. They may not be anywhere close to organized or put together, but they do offer up some wise words once and awhile.

We're in college, none of us actually have anything together. In fact, not having anything together is one of our biggest stressors. However, there's a few little things that we do ever so often that actually make us feel like we have our lives together.

1. Making yourself dinner

And no this does not include ramen or Annie's Mac & Cheese. Making a decent meal for yourself is one of the most adult things you can do living on campus. And the food is much better than it would be at the dining hall.
