In today's society, people have a warped vision of what is considered "news." Articles focusing on Kim Kardashians makeup line, whether or not J-Lo is going to get married again, and even Meghan Markle's shoes being a few sizes too big, are considered breaking news.
I'll be the first to admit that I do read some of these articles—mainly to make sure Hailee Steinfeld doesn't get too close to Niall—purely for entertainment.
That's the biggest problem facing our society: mixing up entertaining stories and actual news.
Our world is very complex and has many different problems that get little to no coverage. Why don't writers focus on getting the public the information they need? Saving the bees, the shifting economy, and especially the erosion of national pride are all problems that should be focused on.
Instead of learning about what people can do to save the bees—because without them we wouldn't have food—we get to learn that Markle, and many other royals, wear shoes a few sizes too big to prevent blisters.
Thank God I found that out. I don't know what I would've done without that information.
In my English class last semester, I wrote about the goals I had for myself and for my writing. One of those goals is to work for National Geographic as a writer, with a strong focus on endangered species and informing people about why we need to help these animals. However, our society seems to be moving full speed ahead on only focusing on their form of "breaking news."
Our world news works to give people exactly what it asks for, but it has lost sight in trying to give people what they need. People constantly feel that they have to be entertained, with materialistic things or trying to know everything thats going on in celebrity's lives. I'm not saying that it's a bad thing to be entertained, but when people start depending on entertainment as their news, it becomes a problem.
Hopefully, our society will learn to focus on actual news and give journalist and writers the ability to finally write about the important things, like saying the bees and saving our food.
