1. Quokkas live in Australia on Rottnest Island but are also seen on the Mainland.
2. A Dutch sea captain named Willem de Vlamingh mistook them for big rats.
3. Because of this, he named the island “Rattennest” which is Dutch for “Rat’s Nest”.
4. Quokkas are herbivores. They eat bark, leaves, grass, and stems.
5. Quokkas can survive for long periods of time without food by using fat stored in their tails.
6. They are also nocturnal. This is when they do most of their feeding.
7. Quokkas create trails in order to escape from predators.
8. They can live up to 10 years and start breeding at 18 months of age.
9. Joeys stay in their mother’s pouch for six months. Afterwards, they come out and drink the mother’s milk for two more months.
10. Quokkas are listed as vulnerable. This is due to predators such as dingoes and foxes, agricultural development, and human impact such as housing and logging.
11. Quokkas are also known for their love of selfies!
