Before anyone tries to correct me on this, let's say it all together, "'Meet the Robinsons' is not a Pixar movie. It was made by Disney and Disney only."
Now that we have that over with, let's actually talk about this movie. Not many people remember this movie well, and the details they remember about this movie vary. Most people remember the dinosaur with the bowler hat. You know, this scene?
The other thing most people remember about this movie is the quote from Walt Disney at the end. You may have also seen this quote in your senior year yearbook because it's actually quite popular for senior quotes.
However, this quote is the key part of the movie, as the entire plot is talking about curiosity and how it builds the future. Considering animation became a major part of film thanks to Walt Disney, it makes sense that he is someone who wanted to influence others to change the world around them. So, why is this movie important?
The plot of the movie is an orphan named Lewis is a brilliant young boy who is desperate to find a family, as well. To help him find his birth mother, he develops a machine called the memory scanner to help him remember her, but then gets involved in a plot that revolves around another boy from the future named Wilber Robinson. Through Wilber and the rest of the Robinson family, Lewis learns the power creativity can have on the world and how much of an impact one individual can have. And once he learns he is the one who is the head of the Robinson family and created the world he saw, he figures out how quickly the future can change and how important it is to "keep moving forward" and try for success even through failure.
When young children see this movie, it can leave an impact on them because they are reminded they are not failures just because they fail sometimes. It also reminds them if they are curious and work hard, dreams become reality. These are important values to instill in young children because it can make a difference in their lives throughout school and the future. They'll feel motivated to work harder in science after failing a test. They will practice their sport more after losing a game. Within our failures are successes because a failure means you're one step closer to doing something correctly. This movie shows failure in such a positive light that it can easily change the point of view of failure for a child. The boy, who wants to quit playing the flute because he's terrible, now realizes he will only get worse if he doesn't work. The girl, who gave up trying to draw her house, decides to pick up her colored pencils again and keep trying because one day it will be good.
I was only in fourth grade when I saw this movie, and yet, nine years later, it's still something I use to remind myself to not give up when something goes wrong. Considering the amount of screw ups I've had since I got to college, let alone within my life, I really appreciate having this stuck in my head. It gives me a new way to look at a situation and improve myself for the next time. It's also a constant reminder if I don't like something the way it is, I have the power to change it. Don't follow the standards; set them.
So, rewatch this movie for old time's sake. It's not a bad movie to watch, either, on top of it being inspiring. Use it as a pick me up, or a reminder that even your worst moments can create something great. Remember the future is yours to carve, but if you keep yourself stuck in the past, it limits your abilities in the future. Carve success out of your failures. Use them to build you up.
