Meet ASU Odyssey: Nicole Salars

My name is Nicole Salars, and I am a new reporter for ASU Odyssey. I currently study English and Philosophy here at ASU. Both of my majors share my passion for writing in an academic environment, while here at ASU Odyssey I write a wide range of topics between of lifestyle pieces and student life.

I am currently a sophomore, however I am on track to graduate early in Spring of 2022. I plan to attend law school in Southern California, which is my place of peace. I grew up here in Arizona, but the best desicion I ever made was staying here and attending ASU for my undergrad. Arizona definitely has an unspoken beauty that I will always call home, and in many ways ASU is a part of me and who I've become thus far.

In my free time I love to sing (albeit, not that well), play guitar, and spend quality time with those that I love. I, controversially, enjoy country music; but I love all forms of music especially alternative-rock and alt-pop. I adore old movies; anything with Audrey Hepburn honestly. One fun fact about me is that I can actually do a half-way decent Celine Dion impression. My favorite modern shows include American Horror Story, Jane the Virgin, and Hart of Dixie. I absolutely consider myself a romantic and I love love!

I hope to show my passions in life and my enthusiasm for writing in my work and I couldn't be more excited to be a part of the team at ASU Odyssey.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

Cambio

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
