Meet ASU Odyssey: Amanda Fennell

Hi! My name is Amanda Fennell, and I am a reporter for Arizona State University Odyssey. I used to write for Penn State's Odyssey team, while I attended PSU Abington and majored in Criminal Justice. For personal reasons, I took a break from school, and thankfully have been given the opportunity to enroll in ASU online classes, where I will major in...well...Something new! All of the crime shows are great to watch, but I decided making them real life for me as a career just wasn't the best choice. I am ready for new beginnings, a great positive outlook on things, and a new Odyssey team full of equally wonderful people!

Straying away from school, let me give you further insight on my life. I am originally from Brooklyn, New York, but moved just outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania when I was younger. Yes, we do consume a copious amount of cheesesteaks! I live with my boyfriend and a few of my closest friends...a group of all guys...And then me. Let me tell you, that gets quite interesting. However, I can't say that the toilet seat has been left up more than twice in the two years we've all lived together, so I guess they stray away from the stereotypes. And before you ask, yes, Saturdays are mostly for the boys, and it is usually full of Yuenglings, junk food, and Fortnite. Also, I have learned to become wonderful wing-woman.

I love to paint, do photography, draw, create artsy stuff, and obsess over Disney. I honestly am an encyclopedia for Disney, especially Walt Disney World. I can't say where my love for the popular vacation spot started, but in my twenty-one years of life, I've been there well over thirty times. My goal is to get to Disneyland, and then the parks in other countries! Baby steps, though.

I also work as a Barista at Starbucks. I can honestly say that I have never been happier at a job in my entire life, and I plan on being there for a while. Also, the menu never gets boring! Being able to come up with the craziest drinks is awesome!

I really love to write, and my mom still finds passages from stories I made up when I was in kindergarten. I hope that everything I write for this team can inspire, reach out to, and inform everyone that reads it! Even if it's a good laugh or a new food item for you to try, I hope that you can take something from my page, and I look forward to creating!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

There have been many lessons learned.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
