Meditation is used by every practitioner differently like athleticism is used by different athletes. Baseball players use athleticism differently than football players do, and similarly every person is like their own different sport. Because no two people are the same, the use of a meditative state will differ person to person. The key similarity lies in a simple thought: trust your feelings.
Some people use meditation to dream while awake. Others use it to listen to their subconscious answer questions they have about their conscious world. Meditation can also make minutes feel like hours and will give you plenty of time to decide if you want the large or medium soda.
A misconception about meditation is that meditation is one thing when it is actually many things.
When you say that you like movies, do people assume you like every single movie that has ever existed? Probably not. When you tell people that you meditate though, a common conception is that you sit in silence, eyes closed, and hum to yourself until you find inner peace. Meditation is not always about relaxation though and is certainly not always about peace.
The biggest miscommunication about meditation is that it is relaxing, when in reality meditation can be scary. Meditation is the conscious effort of voyaging into your subconscious and asking it to either engage itself with you or do something to let you watch. Because of this, you have no idea what is going to happen when that subconscious of yours begins spilling its guts.
Basically your subconscious needs a therapist and you're it...so get ready.
You could pose a word in your mind, like election, and wait to see what feelings flow to you. You could think of the face of your mother and see what feelings start to pop up. You could try to read the dancing shadows on the inside of your eyelids or even ask your subconscious to show you a picture of a knight slaying a dragon by simply saying it aloud.
The way to master your meditation and conquer your fears about what your subconscious may blurt out at you is by remembering that your subconscious is a part of you like your hands are a part of your arms: the hands do nothing without the arms holding them there.
Your true actions in the world can be good while your subconscious is scarred or beaten up. You can overcome a subconscious that is frightened and battered through your actions and real, conscious thoughts.
After all, our subconscious didn't just come from nowhere. It was molded, it is changing, and it is always growing based on your life. So long as you feed it with positive feelings and thoughts, you will get positive thoughts back.
So good luck and use your subconscious like a tool, don't believe meditation is one thing, and if you don't like what you see, just return it and try again later.
