I've worked in the healthcare field for about a year now, and there's one thing I know to be true: it's far from easy. However, it is one of the most rewarding jobs you could ever encounter. The endless amount of relationships you build and the people you can help makes all the difference in the world. For all of those who have worked in the medical field here's some things we all know too well to be true:
1. Once you start going to school it feels as if you will never get out ... ever.
The medical field requires A LOT when it comes to classes, which is understandable; I mean, someones life depends on it. Sometimes it feels as if you're trapped and you'll never get to where you want.
2. A patient's death is never easy.
No matter what part of the hospital, nursing home, or any medical centered workplace you are in, we all know death is a certain subject that is never easy for anyone for that matter. Especially if you build a relationship with that patient during the duration of their stay. They say you shouldn't get too attached, but sometimes its hard not to.
3. You learn at least one new thing everyday and frankly, sometimes that can be confusing.
There's a ton of things you learn when working in the medical field and sometimes you catch yourself thinking "what's that suppose to mean?" or "what in the world was that?".
4. Your job will get messy.
There are times when you will get bodily fluids on you, and trust me, this will happen more than once. Sometimes a patient gets it on you on purpose for giggles. It will get messy.
5. You find yourself craving sleep more than you ever have.
Sleep is one of the most important part of a healthy lifestyle. However, in the medical field, sleep is scarce. You find yourself replacing important everyday things with more sleeping time.
6. You will get a difficult patient once a week, on average.
Often you get patients that are confused and angry, or just patients that plain and simple don't want to listen to anything you say. The best way to handle this is to remember to always remain calm.
7. Everyday is something different.
No two days are the same; routines and places you are in and you feel like you are moving all over and can make you feel as if you're going insane.
8. Your job is important.
Last but not least, remember how important your role is as a nurse and just remember why you decided to go into that field. That should always get you through a shift!
