Media Strategy Needs Change

As an American citizen, we should now want only facts from mainstream news outlets.

It is blatantly obvious that the current strategy the media is employing against President Donald Trump is not working. The constant spamming viewers with criticism of Trump, with seemingly no break, has been the focal point for many mainstream news stations throughout the country and frankly has grown old rather quickly.

During the election, overkill on Trump slander did not work and will continue to be unsuccessful as the media tries to wrangle in our new President. They need to invoke real thoughts into people, not just “Trump is bad,” or “Trump is racist,” or ”Trump is misogynist”, it is clear this rhetoric will not change the opinions of Trump supporters. The strategy of taking everything Trump says and somehow trying to flip it against him has not worked, and may have even helped him gain the office in the first place. Trump is a classic entertainer, he knows what will make people talk about him and surely is a firm believer that there is no such thing as bad publicity.

There are even questions at the Super Bowl Media Days throughout this past week directed at Tom Brady and aimed at getting answers about Brady’s apparent friendship or support of Trump. We cannot even enjoy Super Bowl activities without being bombarded with more Trump talk and concerns over opinions that quite frankly have no merit and do not matter at all. All this coverage gives Trump influence that leads to power. Again, there is no such thing as bad publicity, especially for an entertainment extraordinaire.

The mainstream media now has a new job: force Trump to come out of his safe space and answer questions, talk to reporters, and give us actual substance and truth of what is happening. Force him to give us the facts and answer all of our questions. That is what we deserve as American citizens and that is what Trump owes us as an elected official.

If the media believed that, during the election, there was truly only one legitimate candidate, then they should have acted like it. The majority of coverage being devoted to the denunciation of Trump as President had the exact opposite effect than they intended. Instead, coverage should have focused primarily and squarely on Hillary Clinton and how she planned to help people. Ask about the e-mails, then move on and let her speak to her morals, experience, and facts of what she has done. The media forced Clinton to become involved in the slanderous war among all candidates in this previous election. Should have paid him no attention, given him no air time instead of pushing him down our gullets regardless of the message trying to be conveyed.

The contrary media was the reason Trump won. Constantly talking about him gave him and supporters more credibility, legitimizing his candidacy, and making him a force to be reckoned with in the political world. Trump’s transition from entertainment to politics was almost seamless as he controlled all the headlines regardless if they were positive or negative. Again, no publicity is bad publicity and major verified news outlets such as CNN, NBC, FOX, and many others consistently shoved the thought of Trump as our president down our throats. The media tried to smear him like no other candidate had been smeared before, but that just drove people crazy.

For the average person, it was clear to see who the media was pushing for president and citizens finally decided that the media was too biased. They controlled the message against Trump while propagating Hillary Clinton’s e-mail scandal which created a notion of false equivalency. People began to view Clinton’s e-mail controversy as being in the same realm, or being just as bad, as Trump’s controversial ideas and garnered the view of Clinton being a liar. Trump wisely used the e-mail scandal to his advantage, constantly pointing out how the media portrays him as a terrible person while Clinton is being pushed

Stop saying what “could” happen and simply report on what IS happening, nothing more. Just give the American citizens all the facts and they will be able to decide on their own. Trust the people with the information and trust that they will make the right decision. The constant pushing of Clinton onto people ultimately shifted those from “on the fence” in the election to voting for Trump when the time came to cast their vote.

Another solution could also be: Just Stop

Can we just stop talking about Trump now? Discuss literally anybody else in politics EXCEPT Trump. Cover Vice President Mike Pence relentlessly, House Speaker Paul Ryan, The Cabinet, The Senate, The House of Representatives, give them all the coverage in the world and give Trump absolutely ZERO. That is how the media can make a difference in rhetoric with Trump, JUST STOP! I turn on the television, I see criticism of Trump. I go on Twitter and Facebook, I see Trump. Nothing but Trump nonstop, 24/7, it seemingly has no barriers. It does not matter if it is negative reporting or pushing Trump’s agenda, giving him any valuable facetime for extremely minimal substance and opinion is just naïve of the media at this point. He does not say anything, he signs executive orders, tweets his opinion, and sends out his minion Sean Spicer to answer major questions and concerns over Trump’s actions.

If we stop giving Trump all this notoriety he doesn’t deserve, he could fall right off the deep end. The media still has not learned after 2 weeks into a Trump Presidency that they cannot continue to accept Trump’s assertions. When Trump announced through tweet that he was going to select his Supreme Court nominee it felt like a scene straight from The Apprentice. Trump wanted everybody to be aware of his announcement and undoubtedly checked the ratings the following day. We know he checks ratings of speeches through previous tweets and even denounced Arnold Schwarzenegger as Gov. of California and doing a poor job hosting The Apprentice in our celebrity President’s absence from his beloved show.

If people did not watch that completely unnecessary press conference the media could force Trump to actually talk about issues with substance. Why do we not see Trump furiously trying to explain his orders? Simply, because he doesn’t have to. Media and people will continue to cover the things that do not matter as we search for the real truth.

Devote coverage to real facts, real stories of how Trump and his administration have affected various people throughout the United States. Show how people are REALLY hurt by his actions, do not just give us opinions about how it MIGHT affect people negatively. All American’s must surely be sick of all the opinions, we want facts. Give us the real stories, give us the truth and show us the real effects of Trump’s travel ban. As a reporter, don’t tell us why you think the ban MIGHT propagate terrorism or COULD keep talented doctors out of our country, prove it. Once people have the REAL stories they will be able to make a rational decision based on the TRUE FACTS, not just opinions of the elite media

Let’s question the FACTS about the travel ban. Why are these seven the selected countries while other countries who have perpetrated despicable acts of terrorism not on the list? The San Bernardino shooter, who killed 14 people while injuring 22, was from Pakistan, a country not listed on the travel ban. The New York and New Jersey bombings in 2016 was done by Ahmad Khan Rahami, a natural-born U.S. citizen whose parents are from Afghanistan, a country that is not on the travel ban. The Pulse Night Club shooter, who killed 49 and injured 50 more, also originated from Afghanistan, again, not on the list. The Boston Marathon bombers were from Kyrgyzstan and one had Russian citizenship, both countries not on the travel ban. The 9/11 attacks were reportedly carried out by 19 men from – Saudi Arabia (15), the United Arab Emirates (2), Egypt (1), and Lebanon (1).

Those are FACTS that the media should be reporting. Don’t give shove opinions about criticism of the travel ban down our throats, shove the FACTS down our throats and allow viewers formulate their opinions straight from there.

Time for the mainstream media to give us facts, and only facts, and trust that the American citizen will make the best decision.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week.
