Reality Check On What We Call News

Celebrity lives do not qualify as news.

OK here it is -- my honest and opinionated (and yes a little annoying) rant about how little most people actually care about people like the Kardashian family, and how their lives and things alike most certainly do NOT qualify as news.

I have been an active Snapchatter for some time now, and with the new updates, I feel like there are some things that need to be addressed. With the recent updates has come something called the "Discover" page. While a good idea on paper, some of the things, news, that are posted on this page through featured platforms gets under my skin a bit. Of course, it is to be understood that we are in the midst of a technological era, I mean you're reading this article online for Christ sake, but what I don't understand is how we've gotten to the point where we qualify the daily lives of the rich and famous as 'news'.

The "Discover" page showcases some of the 21st centuries most popular social media and news platforms. From CNN to BuzzFeed, these featured stages allow for the quick and easy transfer of information. However, when did who Eva Longoria was seen in Switzerland with come to qualify as pertinent information? How is it that what's going on in Hollywood has come to overshadow more important things that are happening all over the globe? It has been a strategy for years for the press and the media to use public figures as distractions to what's really going on in the world -- to literally shield us from the horrible things that are in fact happening.

When even the celebrities themselves are speaking out on how out of hand the distractions are getting, that's when you know it's a serious issue. Denzel Washington has been interviewed on many occasions and has spoken about how crucial it is that media and the press tell the truth, rather than just being the first. Jennifer Aniston, one of my personal favorites, was claimed to have spoken out against the 'news' coverage on the recent divorce of Angelina Jolie and ex Brad Pitt . Aniston allegedly appeared on the Today show where she was asked her opinion on the breakup of "Brangelina". Aniston then proceeded to (allegedly) tear todays society a new one, and even though this was proved to not have actually happened, I really wish it had. Aniston was said to have talked about how unfortunate it is that people today are more worried about "whether or not an athlete takes a knee during the National Anthem" than they are about an innocent father being executed by police officers on film. She was falsely quoted saying, "This country needs to get it's shit together, stop shooting it's citizens, and stop focusing on stupid nonsense so much." Though the source of this information, a website known as The Good Lord Above , has been discredited for this information, the message still holds.

If you're like me and think you'll snap if you see one more picture of Kylie Jenner's ass much too early in the morning, then I urge you to stop looking to platforms like Snapchat's Discover page for your news. Yes -- it has features from CNN, We The People and even National Geographic, but if you really want to be an "informed millennial", as we're so rarely called, I incline you to pick up the Sunday Times, or subscribe to news platforms online. We live in an age overrun by technology and the need to know everything that's happening the second it happens, use this to your advantage, and have a voice.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
