What It Means To Overcome An Obstacle
Pastor Maria Reems

It's only natural to have some obstacles in life. There have been many in different people's lives, whether it is struggles in school or other places, we know that it is all natural. We have all overcome obstacles which lead to us being stronger and smarter. It helps us grow and we learn from how to become stronger. Like most people, I have been successful in achieving success in my fair share of difficulties, but some people may not know that I recently had to revisit a hard time in my life. It came out unexpectedly and like most things in life, I was unprepared.

When I was younger I felt alone at times and sometimes I struggled with sadness and even instances of depression. While it was nothing major it was still something that at times took more effort to try and change an be happy. Finally, after a while, I wasn’t as sad and things seemed to be brightening up for me. However, I was tested and like many other people these tests aren’t expected and sometimes take more time to handle then we expect. This past year I had an instance where I was sad and didn’t even feel comfortable telling some of my best friends what was happening. When I thought about telling them I would think to myself “I’m always telling them something and while this is important maybe it can go away”. For a few weeks I wasn’t myself and no matter how hard I laughed or smiled I didn’t feel happy inside.

While many people did help me get out of this “funk” there is one person who stands out from everyone. If it wasn’t for this one person who listened to everything I said I wouldn’t be back to my normal self. I realized from this that I had found someone who would always listen and not judge the things that I had done or what I had gotten sad or been a little dramatic about. After this situation in my life, I thought to myself how important it is to surround yourself with at least one person who will always be there for you. Each time you get in one of those moods, look for that person who can make you happy. Whether it is your significant other or someone who has been your best friend your entire life, they are only one phone call away. You might think your friends have other things to do but I can tell you that they will always make time for you just like you make time for them.

Sadness and depression will happen, but there are ways for you to get past it. One way to get past an instance of sadness is to find something that automatically makes you happy. For me one thing that makes me happy is the movie High School Musical. While it is a movie that came out many years ago, it is something that can break me out of a time of sadness.

Everyone will go through these moments and there will be times where you want to quit. The solution is never quitting, but finding out what is wrong and looking for a way to feel better. Being able to admit I was depressed once in my life gave me the opportunity to know when I am not myself and finding ways to grow from it. Always seek out help whether you need it or not because if there is one thing I can tell you it is being able to talk about my problems helped fix a lot of my problems.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
