The Value Of Friendship

People will come and go, but your true friends will always be there with you.

The Value Of Friendship

Friendship is a really cool thing. It can sprout up when you're least expecting it and can fall apart in the blink of an eye. The best part about friendship is that you know that these friends are always going to be there for you. Sure you are going to have your disagreements, but you know that eventually the friendship will bounce back and you'll have them laughing right next to you again because they're your friends. Being a true friend is a big commitment as you count on one another to be there for through thick and thin and to never give up on you. Finding friends to stick by your side isn't always easy, but once you have them, they're not leaving you. Here are some of my favorite things from my friendships that just convince me that I am surrounded by the right people.

  • Sitting around on your floor laughing and eating buy one get one free pizza from Domino's.
  • Watching new episodes of Law and Order: SVU every Wednesday.
  • Being able to look at someone and know that something is bothering them, and not letting them leave until they're okay.
  • Supporting one another at events that they have worked hard for and are taking part in.
  • Going on endless adventures.
  • Shooting a good luck text before a big exam.
  • Skyping all night long because you miss seeing them every day.
  • Being in a group message and sending gifs of how much you miss each other because it's been two weeks since you all got together.
  • Having your door always be open for them no matter the time of day.
  • Laying in each other’s rooms until way past quiet hours.
  • Hugging after an argument and admitting that you were both wrong because you value your friendship and don’t want to lose it over something stupid.
  • Singing along to Hannah Montana Pandora while you all do your homework together.
  • Making sure everyone safely makes it back to their rooms at night.
  • Going home for the weekend and reconnecting with your friends at different colleges over breakfast.
  • Being away from each other for a day and realizing how boring your life is without them.

We all remember the days back in elementary school when we would hand out birthday party invitations to every kid in our class because we were friends with everyone. Then when middle school came around, we started to have more of a choice as to who we wanted to be friends with and ended up with a group of mismatched people uniting over the common goal of surviving those awkward middle school years. By the time we reached high school, senior year especially, we were down to just a handful of really good friends that had stuck by our side. We learned to distance ourselves from those who were fake and added poison to our lives and continued to grow closer with the people that lifted us higher, making us a better person.

College is a totally different playing field. You don't know anyone, so you have to move pretty quickly from elementary school through high school and sort out who you want to keep in your life to help you become the person that you want to be and who you need to leave behind. I think that I have definitely found a solid group of people to call my friends both in school and out of school. My friendships from high school are still strong and a few even go back to elementary school. It's these friendships that remind me of the type of people I want in my life because I only want to surround myself with friends that will encourage me to no end, help me navigate through life and provide me with endless laughter and happiness.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!
