"See the girl who always wears that silver ring? Who is it from? What does it mean? Why does she wear it?" I hear those questions a lot, and I'll answer them here in this article. I am one of many young people who chooses to wear one of these silver rings, better known as purity rings.
There are many styles of silver rings. Some are designed with crosses, hearts, or jewels. Others have the words "purity" or "true love waits" inscribed on them. The silver ring that I wear bears the Bible verse 1 Thessalonians 4:3-4, which reads "For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honor." I live by this verse every day by choosing to stay pure until marriage. There are many reasons why I chose to do this, the first and most important being that my Heavenly Father has lovingly instructed me to do so. I always try to live according to God's will, and I find staying pure until marriage to be a humbling and selfless way to fulfill God's will.
Another reason why I wear this ring is to love my future husband before I meet him. Sometimes it's difficult to be patient, but I know that God has someone amazing in mind for me, and I'm willing to wait for him. On my wedding day, I will make a promise to love my husband every day of my life. Today is a day of my life, so by practicing abstinence, I am already committing myself for the man that God has planned for me.
When you see that girl or guy wearing a silver ring, take a minute to think about the incredible promise they made. Realize how strong they are for resisting the temptations of this world, and the self-control that they are learning and practicing. Know that whoever promises to stay pure until marriage and shows this promise by wearing a silver ring does so out of respect and love for themselves, their future spouse, and God.
