Growing up, it was a treat to get McDonalds. It always meant that my brother and I had been very good and we were being rewarded by going to McDonalds, playing in their play area, eating chicken nuggets, and playing with the Happy Meal toys. The Happy Meal toys were often based off of an animated movie character that was in the latest new movie. I particularly remember playing with a Lilo and Stitch toy right after that movie came out.
Until Feb. 15, McDonalds is not going to give out toys with their Happy Meals. At first, I was shocked. Those toys are a part of my childhood, honestly. It's almost as bad as the new Disney Channel shows. They both take away from what I grew up watching or playing with.
Then I found out that they are giving books away instead of Happy Meals toys to support the foundation Reading is Fundamental. Then I felt like a jerk for even thinking anything in the first place.
Each book is made to fit the Happy Meal size. Some of the books that they have released are "Paddington," "Pete the Cat," "Clark the Shark Takes Heart," and "Happy Valentine's Day, Mouse." McDonald's plans to distribute more than 17 million books during this time. This will be the third year in a row that McDonald's has done this swap.
Reading is Fundamental, or RIF, has grown to become the largest nonprofit literary organization in the United States. Other than McDonald's, RIF has partnerships with State Farm, Macy's, Barnes and Noble, and Kappa Kappa Gamma. It has distributed more than 412 million books to more than 40 million children nationwide, improving their opportunity to read, learn, and grow. Despite this, only one in three kids have access to proper books at home. So, feel free to go out an buy yourself a Happy Meal to support the cause. If Happy Meals aren't your thing, consider donating to RIF or (shameless plug) participating in Kappa Kappa Gamma's philanthropy events.
