Are you seeing the headlines streaming through your social media newsfeed, phone notifications, television and radio about some fight and feeling like you've been under a rock? Allow me to bring you up to speed.
A much anticipated, highly publicized, fan fantasy fulfilling matchup between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor is about to take place on the evening of August 26, 2017 sometime between 9-11 pm EST (after all the prefights have finished). Here are 7 reasons why it is one for the history books:
1. Mayweather is an Undefeated Boxing Champion
Floyd Mayweather retired two years ago with a perfect 49-0 record. Seeing him back in the ring is a big deal to boxing fans.
2. McGregor is No Boxer But He is an MMA Champion
Connor "The Notorious" McGregor is the most popular UFC Mixed Marshal Arts fighter right now. The only things that rival his MMA skills are his fashion sense and quick wit. He keeps people entertained.
3. This Event Will Probably Bring in More Revenue Than Any Fight Ever Has
Not all boxing fans enjoy watching UFC, and some UFC fans find boxing dull. Now that there's a match between one of the greatest boxers and one of the greatest UFC fighters; whether it's excitement or curiosity, a lot of people will tune in.
4. This Will Be the Most Pirated Live Stream Event to Date
And since so many people will want to watch it, and PPV is charging $100 for one fight, it will be the most pirated sporting event ever.
5. Women are as Pumped for This as The Men Are
Some women are fans of boxing and UFC but even some who normally don't pay attention are pumped for this fight. See Ainsley Earhardt from Fox and Friends describe her enthusiasm to see a good fight and some blood and guts (video).
6. This is Like the Movie Rocky Balboa in Real Life
If you've seen the movie, this point needs no explanation. Now I want to watch the movie again!
7. Sports Are Unifying!
Another Odyssey writer is calling this the "most polarizing fight of all time." I beg to differ. I have some friends from San Antonio with whom I share zero political taste but when our Spurs are playing, we couldn't be more united. Sports bring people together and we could use a little unity in our country right now, even if just for a moment to be entertained (Keep that in mind, Mr. Kaepernick).
So there you have it. In a few hours fans of different sports, men and women, people from different cultures around the country and the world will be tuning in for the same event. It's one for the history books. Who is your money on?
