Ah yes, "Sex and the City," a show quoted by women everywhere. Don't even pretend that you and your friends haven't spent hours debating who is Carrie and if you're a Charlotte or a Miranda. Then eventually, one of your friends begrudgingly admits that she's totally a Samantha.
Putting what character you can relate to the most aside, we can also relate to the situations that each character goes through. And while each character is completely different, at the end of the day they are always there to support one another and spew inspirational quotes that women everywhere will quote for the rest of eternity.
As a self-determined Carrie, it only makes sense that my favorite quote would come straight from her mouth -- "Maybe girlfriends are our soulmates and guys are just people to have fun with."
When you first come to college, everything is different and terrifying. You have a grand total of zero friends, and despite everyone telling you that you will find your place (eventually), you're dead-set on the belief that you were destined to have the worst, loneliest college experience of all time. And then, slowly, you start branching out and meeting all kinds of people. When you go to school with tens of thousands of people, I guarantee that you will find someone you at least sort of like. Chances are you'll find your best friends. And if you're really really lucky, you might even find your people.
It just so happens that my people are living and breathing Sex and the City characters. They're the ones who encourage me to do my best and then an hour later convince me to do something crazy and completely regrettable. They tell me when I'm being a pain and hold me up when I simply can't do it alone. They cry with me and for me, then laugh with me five minutes later when one of us says something completely inappropriate and not humourous at all. They're funny, intelligent, beautiful, determined, independent (and sometimes not), kind, sassy, uplifting, and some of the most fiercely loving people you've ever met.
I've found more fulfillment in loving them and being unconditionally loved back than I think I could possibly ever find in any relationship, and I think that's how it should be. At the end of the day, relationships end and hearts get broken, but your girlfriends are the ones who are going to be there through it. They know you and your heart inside and out. They understand you like nobody else could, and get you through the hardest of times when you don't think it's possible.
So thank you to every guy that's been there. Thank you to the ones I've loved and to the ones who I've just had a lot of fun with. But beyond that, thank you for showing me time and time again that my girlfriends are my real soulmates.
