Carrie Fisher. When you see those two words together, what do you think of? Best known for her role as Princess Leia in theStar Wars movies, she is also an activist, an author, a mother, and a daughter, to name a few. Millions of people were in shock on December 27th when when it was revealed that she passed away, after she had a heart attack when the plane that she was on was close to landing at an airport in L.A. Paramedics removed her from the flight and rushed her to the hospital, where she died four days later. It was especially jarring for fans because it was revealed that she was in stable condition from a statement from her mother - Debbie Reynolds - a day or two before she passed. To make the situation more tragic, Reynolds passed away from a stroke just one day after her daughter.

Fisher's first film was called Shampoo, followed by the first installment of Star Wars in 1977, when she was only 19 years old. Her experience - and her affair with costar Harrison Ford - was written about in her latest autobiographical memoir, The Princess Diarist. She became an outspoken advocate for mental health awareness and substance abuse after her issues with drugs, alcoholism, depression, and bipolar disorder.

Carrie Fisher is not only a fantastic actress and an icon. She is a force to be reckoned with, a symbol of hope, on and off screen. Proof that anyone can overcome their hardships, be successful, and gain that happiness again which they thought was lost. Carrie has said many wise things, but this one is one of my favorites: "Don't slide through life. Savor it. Slow down. Be kind. Pay attention. Because this isn't going to happen again." And that couldn't be more true. (x)

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
