In a thrilling home game on Saturday November 5th, the CMU Mavericks grabbed a win in the championship game for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC). Starting out with a very shaky lead of only 4 points, the Mavs pulled ahead of their opponents, the South Dakota School of Mines Hardrockers, and won the game 48-38.
This win has been hard fought, with the Mavs going in with a season record of 7-2. Those 2 losses were back to back and especially painful, but the 2 games prior to the championship saw some excellent plays, both ended in wins and had the team going into this final game riding high. After last year, where the Mavs only won on a technicality after the CSU Pueblo Thunderwolves had to forfeit the title, truly winning fair and square has put a spring in everyone's step.
Playing in less-than-ideal conditions, with rain making the field slippery, there were a number of injuries throughout the game, though none seemed especially severe. The Hardrockers did seem at odds with the referees, especially in the last quarter, and their plays earned them a number of penalties.
Tyler Fransen, General Manger at the CMU radio station, KMSA 91.3, was doing the play-by-play commentary for the game. "It was a great game," he says, "Great offense and a solid defense. Josh Brown, Eystin Salum, Blake Brockett, Antonio Clark and David Tann are all among the top players."
The season isn't over yet - next Saturday we will see the Mavs once again play on their home field: Kelly/Shorts Stadium against Azusa Pacific University before going on to try for the really big win - NCAA. Playoffs start on November 19th and the final game will be held on December 17th in Kansas City, Missouri. Let's hope the Mavs can hold on to the win, and take the NCAA by storm!
