What It's Like To Be A Math Major
The Odyssey

Walk into class and the professor starts speaking gibberish.

No questions asked. If we're all Math majors then we must already have a vast knowledge of all things mathematical, right? No, actually. That is an incorrect assumption and it makes me want to cry because I love Math, but I don't really know math. So I need to be taught Math. But the professor thinks I just already know Math.

When you finally think you understand something then the professor asks you to apply it to some really hard problem and you're just like...

Why couldn't you do the really hard problem to start with? If this was the worst it was going to get, you should have taught us this first THEN showed us the easy problems. Now I want to cry.

Then you finally do understand a problem after staring at it the whole class and you're just....

So happy because you finally get it! Yes, professor, you finally said something that got through to me! Then, he moves on so fast you do not even get to showcase your talent of being good at one of the 30 things he just taught.

When the Math professor walks by to check how you're doing on a problem

And you have absolutely no clue what he just taught. So you write some numbers and signs down and hope they make sense. Meanwhile you're also hoping the professor does not look too hard or ask any questions because you do not know the answer.

Class is cancelled.

You now have a full day without any Math in it whatsoever! What will you do with this new found freedom? This is the greatest day for college students because, if you have class Tuesday and Thursday and they cancel one, you go five to seven days without Math!

"Your final will be cumulative." Enough said.

So many tears, so much screaming and too much memorization. Who even know this type of Math existed? Why did I sign up for this? Do I really like Math this much? Is it too late to quit?

When you finally pass.

After a semester of tears, nervous breakdowns, numbers pouring out of your ears and Thursdays staying in—because you have a quiz or test every Friday—you finally get a few weeks off to practice some yoga and calm down before it beings again. But if you don't pass, the class is still over and you'll have notes when you retake the class.

In the end, it's all worth it. Although Math is hard, sometimes confusing most problems are so time consuming you have to cancel all plans for the next week to finish them, it's worth it in the end. Math is great! As a future Math teacher, I can tell you Math is not worthless in real life—but I can't tell you when you'll use the Pythagorean Theorem ever again.

Friendship. It's defined as the state of being attached to another person by feelings of affection or personal regard, but what really is friendship? Is it that occasional hallway talk with that one person who always manages to cheer you up? Is it that relationship you have with someone where they can be gone for a long period of time, but when they come back, it's like they never left? Is it spending every waking hour with someone, and knowing every detail about their life? Is it the relationship that's filled with fighting, but filled with even more resolution? I've learned that it's all of these things, and every friendship is different. It's a beautifully dysfunctional mess that should always be cherished and never be taken for granted.

I've known you your entire life. More than likely I held you in the first three days of it and at least one of us cried. Cousins are truly one of the best things in the world and while sometimes I complain about how many people crowd Grandma's living room on Christmas Eve, I wouldn't trade you all anything.

You are my best friends, the only people who can understand what it's like on Thanksgiving, and you are the spunkiest people I have ever met. But you as so so young, most of you are just now starting your adventures in the public education system. I mean, I'm so very young too. I'm not married, I don't have children, heck, I just started my adult life, but I do want to give you what little advice I have. My dears, these are the things I want you to know.
