When it comes to matching tattoos, I have two. With two of my longtime best friends, I chose to ink our friendship onto my body.
I'll be honest with you, my parents weren't a fan of it. They would ask, "What if something happens and you're not friends anymore?"
My answer to that is no matter what, I will always be connected to my friends. These are the people that have been there for me when I was at my lowest, and who celebrated with me when I was working my way to the happiness that I have now. Friends are something that should never be taken for granted. There isn't anything that I wouldn't do for those two.
The process for choosing what to get as a tattoo is probably the hardest part of the process. With one of my friends, we shared our favorite images on a Pinterest board until I noticed that we had both pinned the same thing in there. And from that moment on, we knew what we were getting.
Each tattoo has to be thought out with meaning and purpose. I don't believe in arbitrary tattoos that you just think up and get on the spot. Everything that I have on me is well thought out and planned, and they mean the world to me. In my mind, I have my story inked on my skin.
I'd be crazy if I didn't acknowledge that my best friends are the ones who have been there through everything. A love like the love I have for them is something that will never fade. The tattoos that we got together are a symbol of something that represents us together.
With my best friend Erin, we both got a treble clef and our voice parts on opposite wrists. Our love for music is one of the things that helped us bond through high school and even after. There is no one else that I'd rather take to concerts and sing in the car with.
With my other best friend, Mackenzie, we got mountains. We went on so many hiking trips and walks outside that getting mountains just felt right. We knew it as soon as we saw the design. The talks and laughs we shared on those trips are memories I will cherish forever.
If you're asking yourself at this point whether or not you would get a matching tattoo with your friend, you need to realize that this tattoo is more than just something that you think is pretty. This is a commitment to your friend to always love them. To make sure that you help them when they're down and be their support system. This is not just a whim that you feel on a Tuesday afternoon.
So, to my friends, I love you both to the moon and back.
