My heart is breaking. It's been broken for all the victims of gun violence for years. I'm not even surprised anymore. Every morning I hear some mass shooting news and feel like a part of "Are you fucking serious? again?" moment. This is now normal. Congratulations we did it: we normalized mass murder. I feel disgusted that I no longer get shocked, but I'm even more disgusted that there are so many shootings that I no longer get shocked.
Enough is enough. In less than 24 hours, 31 people were killed in senseless acts of gun violence in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio including Jordan and Andre who tried to protect their 5-year-old daughter. The shooter in El Paso shooting drove 600 miles to shoot up a predominantly Latino mall. El Paso is 80% Hispanic. It was a targeted attack on Mexican immigrants and he believed that they were an 'invasion' to the country. He was not mentally ill. He was a racist and a terrorist.
These 2 shootings in 13 hours showed once again that it is ridiculous that citizens can own assault rifles. How can we live in a country where simply going to school, the movies, the mall, shopping, or a fun night out can turn out to be the day or night we get murdered?! We are not the enemy. The people who were trying to escape their nightmares in their home country are not enemies. The mother who wants her son to have a better future is not the enemy. We all want the same thing- freedom and happiness. We are so much more alike than we think.
something needs to be changed. I don't know what the answer is- but I know it isn't bulletproof school bags and more guns. Instead of thoughts and prayers what we need is gun control and policy changes. Hope people realize it soon enough to have any chance for the brighter future.
