Matt Rambo ended UAlbany’s dream of making the Final Four. Within the first ten minutes, Rambo had already had a hat trick. The Terrapins beat the Danes 18-9 in Delaware Stadium to advance to their fourth consecutive appearance in the Final Four.
“It’s the playoffs. It’s one and done,” Rambo told the Washington Post, he finished with four goals and four assists.
Rambo led the scoring for Maryland, while UAlbany’s Connor Fields led his team with 3 goals and one assist.
Fields, a junior and considered a front runner for the Tewaaraton award ( The Heisman Trophy of college lacrosse), entered the game averaging 6.6 points per game, the national best.
UAlbany coach Scott Marr said that his team was going against strong emotions from the Maryland side. “Their senior class has been to a couple of championship games. For them, I’m sure that was how they were looking at it: Their seniors want to go out and be that class that gets that first national championship for Maryland [since 1975],” Marr said.
UAlbany beat the defending national champion North Carolina Tar Heels in the first round, and opened the game with a 2-0 run. Maryland then went on an eight-goal run that lasted until midway through the second quarter. By halftime, the Terrapins led 12-4. Maryland also outshot Albany 41-29.
This was the Danes ninth tournament appearance and fourth Quarterfinals appearance, the first since 2015. They have never made a Final Four appearance.
