Poise.
This word could have a lot of different meanings. The dictionary definition of the word is "graceful and elegant bearing in a person." Before the last couple of months, this word would make me think of the magazine that Jenna Rink works for in 13 Going on 30. I would think of ballerinas moving across a stage wearing tutus and tiaras.
Now when I think of the word poise, I think of the Maryland men's basketball team. A word that I never knew could be used to describe basketball.
I have never been a big sports person, at least I wasn't until I started at UMD. Now I am a huge sports fan, and I am forever loyal to my Maryland Terps. Basketball has become a particular favorite of mine. I have gone to almost every home game and watched all the others on TV. I love getting to cheer on the players and sharing the game experiences with some of my closest friends.
The first game I went to, I sat with some of my friends. One of which used to word "poise" to describe Maryland's #5, Eric Ayala. Each game after that every time Ayala had the ball, my friends and I would look at each and say "oh my goodness the poise."
Soon after that, I started hearing the word poise being said by Anthony Cowan Jr. (#1) and Coach Mark Turgeon. After a six-game win streak, Cowan said in a post-game interview that the team needed to continue to play with poise.
Maryland is currently ranked third in the Big Ten Conference and thirteenth overall. They have a 16-4 record.
Maryland basketball has become one of my favorite things. Even though I may not understand all of the rules just yet, but either watching the games at the Xfinity Center is still so much fun. I am so excited for all the upcoming games and to continue to watch the Terps play with poise.
