Marvel’s big screen debuts of its popular hero’s can be categorized as one of the biggest successes in the franchises history. Soon to be released is Captain America’s Civil War will feature almost all of Marvel’s heroes: Iron Man, Ant Man, Thor, Black Widow and even Spiderman. Oddly missing from the fight is Marvel’s street fighters, Jessica Jones, Daredevil and Nick Cage.
While they may be dubbed lesser-heroes, their Netflix series have some of the best cinematography, the best action scenes and a more realistic take on what it takes to be a hero. While Captain America still held on to some of its comic book feeling, Jessica Jones and Daredevil dive into the nitty-gritty of real life and choices. There is no red-faced villain at the end of the movie. No epic clash between a god and a giant. Instead there is a premise that even the most mundane of people can become more.
Marvel released the second season of Daredevil on Netflix that follows the hero, Matt Murdock, a blind lawyer who is a vigilante at night. After season one, Murdock has a better sense of the hero he can be, but it’s during the second season, which is a mix of Law and Order and comic book violence, the season dives deep into the gangs of New York.
The scenes are perfectly measured for story, background, and action. In a way, Daredevil has stepped up its game and become more like the comic hero than in its previous season, which gives it a flare that some of Marvel’s recent Avenger’s movies have missed.

Now Jessica Jones is a new wave of heroes. She is flawed and complicated after dealing with the death of her parents, the abuse of her foster mom, and the abuse she suffered in a bad relationship. What makes her super is not only her powers, which allow her to jump/fly and have super strength, is her mentality to face her fear and save those she feels are following in her footsteps. It’s a dark, edgy, sad, and violent story of a hero who is starting to realize all they can accomplish
.
Each story has a deep connection to the Marvel universe, but at the same time they stand alone so well that with the success of the Marvel series on Netflix, there is word of even more potential heroes that will get their origin story. It’s the careful details and seasons that set up the heroes better than a two-hour movie can do.
So while Marvel keeps dropping new movies and heroes, Netflix will still be the go to place to find a hero that is more human than the God’s on the screen. While the general public may not know of The Defender's storylines, their heroes are finally being introduced in the best ways.
