Why Your Favorite Movie Is Probably Wrong

A case for the best movie.

People say art is subjective, and that’s all well and good.

But... c’mon we all know that art strives to be the best. It would be an incredible cop out to pretend that people who create would not like what they create to have a profound, lasting effect on the world.

Take movies, for example. Directors and writers try to create movies that will have a profound effect on culture.

The Outhousers

Except Michael Bay. He just wants to see s**t explode and make money.

But overall, directors want to make the best movies. And some of them succeed. And I’m not talking about the best in some “category.” I’m talking about the best overall. I mean, it’s not like people compete JUST to be better in a certain category. (What’s that?... They do?... Oh… Well hush).

As we look across the scape of movies, there is one that towers above all others. That movie is...

Okay… so it isn’t one movie per se, but that’s what makes it so much better! Besides making ALL of the money, this behemoth of a universe keeps you invested long term and is everything that one movie simply cannot be.

So let’s go over why the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is the best.

Multiple Genres

Many erroneously think that all superhero movies are about people in tights flying around and destroying things, but that isn’t true.

DCEU notwithstanding

But there are movies that reach out to every genre. You have Ant-Man bringing in heist movies. You have The Winter Soldier bringing in espionage thrillers. Iron Man 3 gave us the bait-and-switch tactics that one might find in a classic mystery movie (whether you like it or not).

Age of Ultron even gave us a romance between Black Widow and the Hulk that raised some terrifying physical questions about the limits of the human body.

30 Minutes into “Save the World and Chill…”

Either way, if you’re looking for something then there will be at least one movie for you.

Rewriting Norms

Another cool thing about the MCU is that it has rewritten the standard for what is “cool.” Growing up reading comics, I certainly remember it being a fringe activity. And before I was even born, comics were liable to get you an 80s-style wedgie from a movie-style bully.

NOW, however, people of all shapes, sizes, and creeds can come together simply to enjoy the stories, and these are stories that are pretty faithful to the source material. The point of watching such movies and reading comics is to imagine yourself in a world where amazing things can happen, and now that’s an experience people aren’t afraid to have.

Last but not least...

The last, and possibly most compelling reason:

Have

A Mother****ing

Collider

Hulk.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
