I Asked 33 People For Relationship Deal-Breakers, And It's Astonishing People Still Get Married In 2019

We all have them.

We all have those things that we just can't stand if a significant other does that would be enough to end things.

Commonly called relationship deal breakers, we all have them whether we have thought about what they are or not.

Some people already know what they are and won't pursue someone if they have those traits that they don't like, while others don't flat out know what they consider to be their deal breakers yet.

Knowing your deal breakers can be really beneficial in the dating game, as it can help eliminate people who fall under those traits and it can help you find what you do like. Plus, your deal breakers may even be shaped by your experiences in past relationships.

So I asked people what their relationship deal breakers are, since they can be helpful in dating, and this is what they said:

Female, 23

Talking over me.

Female, 24

Cheating before, talking to other girls while we're dating, and not being respectful of other women.

Female, 20

Cheating, hiding things behind my back or just lying, and being disrespected.

Female, 20

Smoking and drugs are for sure deal breakers for me. Another deal breaker would just be if they're unkind to others, I immediately lose interest. Also, if they try to correct me all the time- that's a turnoff for sure.

Female, 19

Cheating, lying, have zero motivation, have zero accountability, fight a lot/high maintenance, bad friends, never initiate.

Female, 19

My biggest relationship deal breakers are if they are not being eager to introduce me to their friends, they don't make me feel like I am valued, and if they don't think to tell me anything going on in their life.

Male, 20

Smoker, cheating history, known to be bouncing around to person after person, if they are significantly taller than me (like if the height different is very noticeable) so like by a few inches, they are not a family person, and they loves cats (like needs to have a cat in the house 24/7 as a pet).

Female, 27

Unfaithful, extreme political or religious differences, no ambition or desire to achieve things in life.

Female, 20

Being clingy. I need my own space.

Female, 23

Smoking cigarettes, there are so many other options that don't have the smell. An active alcoholic, if you are sober that's different. If they don't have a relationship with their family because they don't try. My family is my everything and if they don't understand that and can't have a bond with their family how will they have one with ours?

Female, 19

Lack of communication/trust, overusing weed/alcohol, cheating.

Male, 20

Smoking, unintelligent, not being able to laugh at themselves.

Female, 19

Anger issues, past relationship problems such as cheating etc, doesn't get along with my family, controlling, and passive aggressive.

Female, 22

Smoking, illegal drugs, and cheating.

Female, 27

Cheating while in the relationship, crossing any boundaries that have been identified in the relationship, and disrespectful.

Female, 19

Smoking, vaping/juuling, controlling, and if they don't understand my sense of humor/sarcasm.

Female, 26

Not financially stable.

Female, 28

Cheating, lying, rude, and doesn't compromise or communicate.

Male,19

Smoke cigs and if they don't treat waiters kindly.

Female, 20

If they don't make me feel like I am important/prioritize me and if they get jealous/angry for stupid reasons

Female, 20

Narcissism, cruel to animals, and if they are rude to people just trying to do their job (retail employees, severs, etc).

Female, 19

Cheating, smoking cigarettes, lying, abuse, and if they are controlling/tell me what I can and can't do.

Female, 21

If they open Snapchats and don't reply.

Female, 21

Doing drugs.

Other, 20

Abusing alcohol; smoking cigarettes/vaping; have cheated before; trump supporter; pro-life; homophobic, transphobic, etc.

Female, 21

Hard drugs/frequent drug taking, cheating (but probably wouldn't be super black or white, like would be open to hearing their perspective first), if they are super conservative, what their expectation of women in a marriage is- if they want me to give up my career to be the primary carer, instead of working part-time then this is a massive deal breaker for me. Religion to a lesser extent/ it depends on how strictly they adhere to their values/whether they would expect me to convert. Relationship with their family and friends isn't so much a deal breaker but more a red flag if it seems toxic on their end.

Female, 19

Cheating, not having goals, lying, hypocritical tendencies

Female, 20

If someone has no motivation in life, it's a deal breaker. I need someone with goals and ambition to succeed in life like myself.

Female, 21

If they don't communicate when needed.

Female, 27

Smoking and a man that already has children from a previous relationship/marriage.

Female, 26

Not liking animals (everyone has their breed preferences but just in general not wanting to live with or enjoy the company of animals). Not treating service industry well. Both of those things signal a huge lack of humanity and compassion in a person.

Female, 22

If they smoke cigarettes, call their ex a psycho, can't handle their alcohol, disrespect my friends, disrespect my family, do heavy drugs, or disrespect me in any way.

5 Things To Do That Are Better Than Writing A Paper

Don't waste your time trying to write that paper when there are so many more interesting things you could be doing.

Writing a paper is never fun and is rarely rewarding. The writer's block, the page requirement, be specific, but don’t summarize, make sure you fixed any grammatical errors, did you even use spellcheck? and analyze, analyze, analyze.

Papers can be a major pain. They take up so much time and effort that by the end of the process you hate yourself and you hate the professor for making life so difficult. Questions of your existence start roaming in your mind. Am I even cut out for college if I can’t write a single paper? Am I even capable of taking care of myself if I lack the energy to open my laptop and start typing?

sisters

I can barely remember back when I was the only child. Most would say it’s because it is extremely difficult to remember things as a toddler but I would say it's because I was bored until my sister came along. My mother always says how important the "sister bond" is and with every year that passes I realize how right she is. Instead of writing a novel about all of the wonderful things there are about having a sister I decided to list a few of them instead.

It is the time of our lives that we are beginning to enter the adult world and most of us, if not all of us, have no idea what we are doing. It's like starting a video game, but skipping the tutorial. We're all just running around aimlessly hoping we accidentally do something right that moves us along the right path. Now that graduation has just happened, or is right around the corner for some of us, it's time to start thinking about how we are going to take care of ourselves once we are on our own.
