We are all familiar with Maroon 5 or at least with Adam Levine. Since debuting in 1994 as grunge band Kara Flower's they have become a household name in the music industry just now as Maroon 5. After performing for more than two decades they have changed up music and shifted to a different approach than the original grunge from 1994. The band has shown many signs of success and have created some fantastic music videos such as crashing weddings in "Sugar," Adam Levine fighting off obstacles to see the girl he loves in "Won't Go Home Without You," or the sad love story for "She Will Be Loved" Maroon 5 has continuously created remarkable videos but their most recent one for "Girls Like You" has to be the best one yet.
The music video features Levine standing at a microphone singing the song while the band plays in the background and the camera rotates. While the camera rotates different women are dancing while Levine sings with cameos from Gal Gadot, Camila Cabello, Aly Raisman, Ellen Degeneres and many others. However, this isn't the reason it is so amazing. What makes this video so groundbreaking is the clothing worn by the different women throughout the video.
Aly Raisman, an Olympic gymnast who came forward as apart of the USA Gymnastics sex abuse scandal which led to Larry Nassar being jailed wears a shirt that says "Always Speak Your Truth" and Jackie Fiedler wears a shirt saying "Divest, Water is Life." What excites me is that these women had the opportunity to express their feelings in this music video and while it was a music video that displayed fun and powerful women it still sends out a great message.
The song itself is about a man who deserves to keep the company of woman which might not be deemed as empowering like the video but all the women involved show the strength of women we live with and how some of them are ordinary people who do extraordinary things.
While I am still in awe of the music video the thing that excites me the most is the ending when we Adam's wife and daughter and Adam hugs them as the song ends. It is one thing to be a celebrity but to be a celebrity and a mom deserves a lot of credit. Growing up my mom went above and beyond for her children and my dad (she still does). Seeing this video makes me realize that we need to see women for their strength and the ability to overcome obstacles.
Music videos are always changing and "Girls Like You" took this approach to the next level. Videos tell a story and this video tells the story of the strength of women everywhere. Going back to Aly Raisman we all know her as a gymnast but she had the confidence and courage to speak on behalf of more than forty gymnasts who were assaulted. There are so many women who face adversity daily and I think having them in a music video celebrating their accomplishments makes me happy.
I highly suggest that everyone watch the music video not just to see the celebrities we love but to see the range of people involved. Athletes, musicians, entertainers all make appearances and they all display strength in different ways. Drake did a similar concept with his music video "Nice for What" meaning this is a topic that is being used by different artist. Being able to see this with different artists makes me realize we need to continue to honor the strength of women and not just the famous ones but the people who work behind the scenes.
