It’s no surprise that Maroon 5 released another single that is ever so catchy. What comes as a surprise is the fact that this song came out nearly seven months ago and it’s just now getting the attention it deserves!
“Girls Like You” is a part of Maroon 5’s sixth album debut, “Red Pill Blues” which came out in early November 2017. The music video and song, newly released single featuring Cardi B, for “Girls Like You” was announced and released to the world late night on May 30. The hype for the video quickly following, spreading all over social media on May 31.
While the song itself isn’t very much of a “women empowerment anthem," the video itself carries out signifying tribute to powerful women all over the world from singers to actresses, spokeswomen to athletes, and activists to social media sensations.
I can honestly say I’ve watched the video at least ten times now and am so impressed with the women they choose and the way they decided to portray the video out.
The music video is basically a cameo of Adam Levine, lead singer of Maroon 5, and different women singing and dancing along to the song all devoted towards woman togetherness and power.
Camila Cabello starts off the cameo with her usual charm. Cabello has recently finished up her first tour as a solo artist after leaving Fifth Harmony in late 2016. Cabello is currently opening on a world tour for Taylor Swift.
Phoebe Robinson, an actress, comedian, and author, follows after.
Olympian Aly Raisman pans in next, embracing her shirt titled “Always speak your truth” with pride. Raisman has had an incredible year of bravery and strength, showing exactly that in a small moment between her and Levine.
Actress, comedian, and producer Sarah Silverman gets panned in next showing off her humorous and addictive side in her few second-long cameos.
Actress Gal Gadot follows in next showing off her adorable dance moves.
YouTube personality, Lilly Singh who goes by “Superwoman” online gets panned in next. Singh said on Twitter after the video was released that it was “such an honor to be included alongside many other queens.”
The second chorus of the song went into a cameo showing the women of Muslim Women’s Day founder, Amani Al-Khatahtbeh, who created Muslim’s Women’s Day at 24 years old, Trace Lysette, an actress and proud transgender woman and one of the first trans people to appear as a non-trans person on prime-time television, comedian, and actress Tiffany Haddish. Immigration activist, Angy Rivera, who’s an inspiration to many young adults and children and proudly wore a shirt that said “undocumented, unafraid, unapologetic”, and comedian, activists, 988rdand actress Franchesca Ramsey.
The cameo continued and then went on to show Millie Bobby Brown, young and upcoming actress, and comedian, television host and LGBT activists, Ellen DeGeneres.
After panning back to Levine, Cardi B comes in delivering her solo for the song. I can honestly admit, I’m shamefully not the biggest fan of her music, however, I’ve found myself a fan of her part in this song.
Jumping back into the song, singer, dancer, and actress, Jennifer Lopez shows her bright energy dancing along to the song (shameful promo to say J-Lo and I have the same birthday!), panning through the next women in quick moments of dancing, singing, and having fun.
The video continued to show Olympia Chloe Kim, who was the youngest woman to win an Olympic snowboarding medal (in gold even) in the 2018 Winter Olympics. Olympic soccer star Alex Morgan, actress, singer, and winner of nine Grammy awards, Mary J. Blige.
After showing some of the previously mentioned familiar faces, the cameo continued on to show comedic actress. Beanie Feldstein, activist, Jackie Fielder, who quit her full-time job at 23 to join Mazaska Talks, after being moved by the “#NoDAPL” protests in North Dakota, Danica Patrick. One of the most successful women in the history of race car driving, Ilhan Omar.
The first ever elected Somali-American politician lawmaker in Minnesota, actress, and producer, Elizabeth Banks. Author and model, Ashley Graham, and singer-songwriter sensation and actress, Rita Ora.
Before the video closes, there is a sweet moment to be shared between Levine and his wife, Behati Prinsloo, holding their youngest daughter Dusty Rose.
Definitely, one of my favorite music videos to be created and produced.
The video and song share a special moment between women and the power they carry.
If you can’t tell already, I highly recommend taking the short four-minutes to watch (and watch and watch) the music video and appreciate the message and conversation it provokes.
