Do you ever lie awake with your thoughts at 2 a.m. in the morning and ask, “Why exactly is it that I am here on this Earth, right now at this time?!” Do you ever wonder what your purpose is? If yes to any of the following, you sure are not alone. It's a very common thought that we humans all share. Not only do we popularize these thoughts but we tend to really stress about them.
We worry and worry but that won't solve anything. It's a cause for action. To just stand for what you believe in and go out and do something you believe in that betters the community. The truth is you don't have a secret mission from the guy upstairs that is made only just for you. You're meant to just live your life to the fullest but true happiness is when you reach out to your community and help others.
Many of you maybe are thinking that's there not much you can do, but that's a lie. There is so much out there if you just take a nice, hard, long look. Volunteer at your local soup kitchen, volunteer at a camp to help disabled children, or even just simply recycle. The Earth will thank you greatly for it. After all, this is our home so we should really do what we can to take care of it.
If you just take the opportunity in your hands your life will feel so much more fulfilling. You wouldn't have to lie awake in the darkest hours of the night pondering anymore. You could be doing other useful things, like Twitter or Snapchat or sleep. We can all make this a better place if we really care and take the time. It's so rewarding and gives you something to do when you're just going to sit around the house watching Netflix anyway.
I didn't believe that volunteer work would be exciting but then one day my neighbor across the street took me to a soup kitchen for a mandatory community service from my church. I thought I'd hate it and boy did I ever try to. But then I saw the difference I made and I've never been happier. It made me feel really good to make others feel good. I'd practically beg my neighbor to continue to take me and I got my little sister into it too and we had the best time with it. Sadly the program ended, but for me I couldn't let that be the end of the mark I'd leave on this world. Not a “Samantha was here” sign, but a “Samantha is here." To show that I'm alive and I'm not just sitting in silence while the world passes by.
Now I'm volunteering for a week long disabilities camping trip to help people in need and I'm so excited. I can feel my heart leaping out of my chest out of excitement to meet my campers. I know this will be something I'll never forget, and do again.
So I want to share with you my happiness and excitement by giving you the only advice that I know for sure, which is a quote from Pablo Picasso. It went a little something like, “Your purpose in life is to find your gift, the meaning of it is to give it away,” and I've almost never felt any other words so deeply.
