Margo Roth Spiegelman- A girl equally, if not more interesting than the name itself. She is the love-interest of main protagonist Quentin Jacobs in the novel, and upcoming movie "Paper Towns." "Paper Towns" takes place in Orlando, Florida, and we're introduced to Margo Roth Spiegelman at the end of the first paragraph. She basically is the main character, but the story is told through the eyes of Quentin Jacobs, her long-time friend and admirer. After years of not hanging in the same friend group, the two drifted apart. But on one serendipitous night, Quentin is taken on an adventure of a lifetime with Margo, only to find her missing the next day. Quentin is left clues to find her, and is taken on one last adventure before graduation.
I fell in love with Margo’s character and decided to embrace her as my spirit animal, and I’m here to tell you why you should too.
She is equal parts beauty and brains.
Margo is well known for her piercing blue eyes, perfect figure, and long, beautiful hair. World-renowned model Cara Delevingne is even playing her in the movie (talk about great casting). The lesser-known quality Margo possesses is that she is very intelligent. For example, it took some great intelligence and skill to plan her night of revenge, as well as the elaborate clues laid out for Quentin to find her. Her taste in literature is also pretty advanced: Walt Whitman, "The Bell Jar", "Slaughterhouse-Five" In addition, she also has the whole beauty and brains dynamic figured out. During a conversation with Quentin she says, “that always seemed so ridiculous to me, that people would want to be around someone because they’re pretty. It’s like picking your breakfast cereal on color instead of taste.”
She is the definition of fierce.
Margo Roth Spiegelman will say and do anything she pleases, and she totally pulls it off. Her confidence never once let her down in the novel. Her fearlessness and straightforward nature led her to do the bravest of things, which in return gave her great memories. The evening of pranks she and Quentin preformed is a prefect example of her fierceness. While carting out pranks and revenge, no one could have said it better than the girl herself, “We bring the f****ng rain down on our enemies.” You tell ‘em, girl.
Her unquenchable thirst for adventure is admirable.
Margo was always searching for the next best adventure. From a history of running away, to escaping to her second home, a rundown mini-mall. It was there where she planned her greatest escape of all, the one that sent Quentin after her to a “paper town.” Margo had an obsession with things to be discovered. Her hideout was filled with travel guides on unusual road trip destinations and clues to “paper towns.” At the end of the novel, Margo embarks on her greatest adventure yet: New York City.
She brings out the best in others.
Margo’s magnetic personality is to blame for her ability to bring out the best in others. She balanced Quentin’s reserved, cautious personality with her vibrant, spontaneous one. The night they shared together inspired Quentin to be more confident within himself, which ended up being one the most helpful tool in the search for Margo. Quentin’s transformation from a quiet, well-behaved boy to a blackmailing, braking and entering rebel caught Margo’s attention and she was able to see the positive impact she had made in Quentin.
