A Day In The Life Of A Marching Southerner On Game Day

Game days are my favorite because I really feel connected as a family with this group.

A typical game day can be different for many people. Some of us spend the morning and a portion of the afternoon tailgating with friends and family, while some of us sleep until the last possible second. We start warming up almost two hours before the game starts, this means we try to get ready before warm-up even happens.

Color guard and Ballerinas, our dance team, have to get ready even earlier because they do hair and makeup, and they ALWAYS look great. The warm-up consists of little traditions within each section and then we move on to a full band warm-up. Our warm-up in full band is my favorite because we often sing Salvation and play Stars Fell and hearing all of the different parts and the traditional music is heartwarming.

When walking into the stadium, we move in packs, raising our section flags and laughing all the way there. As soon as we get into the stands we prepare for pregame and play all of our traditional music such as "Stars Fell", "Quilting Party" and "Rooster" to get the fans hyped up for the game and to showcase our Ballerinas as well as the JSU Cheer Leaders.

A fun tradition we have is chanting at someone who just happened to wear an orange shirt to the game that day, I'm not really sure where this came from, but it is so fun confusing the crowd until the person finally realizes we are chanting at them.

Cheering on our Gamecocks is an integral part of the game, we are a group of 500 after all so we make up a large portion of the sound at the games. We bring signs to shake at the players and have a good time with friends in our sections.

Before the 2nd quarter is over, we are already suited up and ready to take the field, for "The Moment You've All Been Waiting For," our half time show, which is usually a shortened version of our full show. For those who want to watch the full show, we sometimes do a post-game performance, but we always have recordings of our performances up for our fans to watch.

At the ending of every game, we sing "I'll Fly Away" with the football team, staff and cheerleaders. Seeing everyone linked up and singing at the top of our lungs is an emotional time, for me at least. At the end of the day when I'm still hot and sweaty, I think that there's no place I'd rather be, and no one I'd rather be with than my band family.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

The transition from living with parents to being on my own was an experience I couldn't have even imagined- both a good and a bad thing. Here's a personal archive of a few of the things I learned after going away for the first time.

Nobody deserves to be living in poverty.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

As an English Major in college, I have a lot of writing and especially creative writing pieces that I work on throughout the semester and sometimes, I'll find it hard to get the motivation to type a few pages and the thought process that goes behind it. These are eleven thoughts that I have as a writer while writing my stories.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
