After this semester ended I had four days to spare, since I booked my flight wrong. Fall semester was indeed quite the experience I will never forget. I made lifelong friendships and explored my interests as an individual.Yet, the best part of my semester was living so close to Manhattan, a ferry ride away to be specific.
Since I could not stay on campus for these four days before my flight I stayed at one of my closest friend's house. While I quite enjoy being a couch potato once in a while, my friend's parents forced us to go out and start being productive. What better way to start being productive than to go to the city? It was the perfect day after all, it wasn't snowing and it wasn't too cold either.
Most tourists have the wrong idea that Manhattan is just this crowded part of New York that stops being appealing after a couple of blocks away from Times Square. They wrongly believe that the only nature place inside the city is Central Park, but let me tell you Manhattan is so much more than that and I finished proving it a couple of nights ago.
My friend and I were just going to the city to spare time and hopefully get a good meal before heading back to the island. We took the 1 train straight to 42nd street and as soon as we stepped out we remembered why we don't really like going to the city that often. The sidewalks were completely packed and so was the subway station. People stopping in the middle of the street to take pictures, completely forgetting that New York is constantly moving forward. Yet, we were determined to have a good time.
So our adventure began. We started walking, walking, and walking. During this immense walk we ended up in Lexington Avenue. During this adventure we discovered some interesting diners and art galleries worth visiting in the future. We took amazing pictures at Rockefeller Center and got to finally visit the Grand Central station. Along the way we also met quite amusing people on the streets.
Yet, the city can sometimes make you feel like you are just another number. It can be quite intimidating, specially if you are in one of those crowded tourist hotspots. My point is, don't get fooled. Manhattan is one of the most amazing places in the entire world. There are amazing restaurant, art galleries, antique stores, and sometimes all it takes is to get out of your comfort zone.
