Due to Tana Mongeau's new Youtube video "6 Conspiracy Theories That'll F- YOU UP," the Mandela Effect is something many of us are familiar with now. If you missed the video here's a link. The Mandela Effect, named after Nelson Mandela, is when large amounts of people remember something that turns out not to be true, such as Mandela dying in prison. I'm talking a lot of people, millions even, will remember something being one way even if that way never happened. Mandela, in fact, died in his home surrounded by family. Mongeau explains in her video some other instances she's heard or discovered. For example, the color chartreuse. Now, I personally remember learning chartreuse is a shade of pink. Many people remember it the same as me. However, if you look up chartreuse it is clearly a shade of green/yellow. She also mentions that how the infamous Snow White phrase "Mirror, mirror on the wall," is actually "Magic Mirror, on the wall." So, how can this be explained? Well, there are two possibilities.
The Butterfly Effect: A butterfly flaps it's wings and causes a tsunami on the opposite end of the word. This theory is based on time travel and the space-time-continuum. Some people believe that somebody went back in time and altered things a little. Even as slight as changing the spelling of a book (specifically the Berenstain Bears), or as big as determining Nelson Mandela's fate. Some believe that those who have the false memory somehow got warped in time with those who don't. They believe there is a parallel universe and people are moving in and out of it and crossing over into different timelines. This theory is very trippy and keeps me up at night. A Reddit user springs the question, "If this theory is real, what if our entire life changes due to this alternate universe but we never know about it?" Our entire existence could be altered if this theory is real!
People Mis-Remember Things: This explanation assumes that everyone simply has false memories of the Mandela Effect cases. While some people are positive that there was a children's called book the BerenstEin Bears, The BerenstAin Bears was a common bedtime story book. Parents would often be the readers. If a child were reading, it would be unlikely that they sat there and read the title. It's all about the pronunciation. If you heard it as STEEN or STEIN, your head would probably assume that it was spelling with an E. Another reason people have false memories is because the truth gets flawed, like one big game of telephone. This explains the Snow White and Star Wars example. Some say that the Mandela Effect happened with the Star Wars phrase "Luke, I am your father," when in reality the phrase is, "No, I am am your father." This one blew my mind. I could have sworn it was Luke! But then I thought about it. Did I always know it was Luke, or did I just know it because people always said it? See, the phrase "Luke, I am your father," is a paraphrase of what Vadar said. This could have started because people would instantly know the reference. Then it could have caught on and turned into millions of people remembering it that way.
So, what do you think is the real explanation?
