8 Ways to Relieve Stress

1. Focus on the moment.

Many times when we feel anxious or worried, it is because we are thinking about too many things at once.

2. Don't keep it inside.

Simply talking about the way you feel can be a huge stress reliever. Reach out to someone you feel comfortable talking to, and tell them how you feel. Or, if this isn't an option for you, you can write the way you feel instead. Start by writing down everything you are stressed about, and why it is causing you to feel stressed. Then write down if there is anything you can do to change it. This will help you sort out your mind and any confusing thoughts.

3. Do something that will make you happy/ proud of yourself.

If you can't think of anything , here are lists of fun hobbies you can try if you are looking for something new.

Things To Do In Your Spare Time.

4. Reflect.

Ask yourself if what you are stressed about will matter 5 years from now. A lot of times, the things we worry about can be changed with time and effort on our part. Or, they are out of our control, and cannot be changed right away. Either way, it is important to find a healthy way to cope.

5. Exercise.

I know what you're thinking... "Me, exercise? Yeah right!" If you're like me, and haven't always been the fitness type, simply going for a walk can help improve your mood. You don't have to run a marathon. Getting physically active increases blood flow and releases endorphins (feel good hormones) throughout your body, and can drastically change negative feelings.

6. Listen to music.

Listen to your favorite song, or uplifting music. Whatever you do, try to stay away from sad songs . Sometimes, they only make you feel worse, and overthink even more. However, if that song will boost your mood somehow, feel free to listen as much as you need to.

7. Improve sleep pattern.

While stress can cause lack of sleep, not getting enough sleep can cause you to feel even more stressed. Also, sleep is necessary for the body to function properly. When you get a good nights rest, your concentration, and overall mood can improve drastically because your body will feel refreshed.

8. Disconnect from social media.

Take some time to log off of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc... and spend the day relaxing, and getting to know yourself. Your likes, dislikes, your goals and dreams. Constantly scrolling through your news feed can sometimes make you feel even more stressed and worse about yourself. It is very easy to compare your life to someone else's when you don't truly know what their real life is like.

Stress is an inevitable part of life. It is something we each experience, and will continue to go through for the rest of our lives.

But what you can control is how you react to stress, and what you do to manage it. Too much stress can cause health problems, and take a major toll on your body's overall health in the long run. Even though it may not seem like it at the moment, things will get better.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week.
