With "Mamma Mia! 2 Here We Go Again" coming to theatres this July it’s only right to take a moment to pay tribute to their original and reflect on how it truly changed this genre (in my opinion). Before this movie came out there were very few other movies that follow suit with this musical genre.
There were the traditional movies and then there is Broadway-- there really wasn't a movie such as this that had a combination of both. The break out into song with already choreographed dance moves was something that was not common in film during this time period--granted it only came out 10 years ago but a lot has changed since then.
"Mamma Mia!" took a huge risk taking a Broadway show ("Mamma Mia!") and turning it into a movie. Broadway and movies are from two different worlds and sometimes don't go hand and hand when trying to make a show interchangeable from the stage to the TV screen.
You might argue that with the cast for the movie it would have easily been a hit regardless of what the movie was about. However, 10 years later people are still raving about this movie and are even coming out with another one. The cast, aside from who they are (A-list actors such as Meryl Streep), they did something right with this movie.
Thank you, "Mamma Mia!" for taking a risk with this creative idea and opening up the horizons for directors to follow in times to come. If you haven’t seen this movie I highly recommend giving it a shot!
