For most people, the end of spring means the beginning of summer, but for music lovers it marks the beginning of something even better – festival season.
Every year from April to September there is some type of weekend-long music festival happening somewhere in the U.S., whether it’s the star studded Coachella in California or the easy going Hang Out Fest on the beaches of the Alabama Gulf Shores.
For fashionistas, festival wear has become its own season. Signature items spotted at music festivals like crop tops, 70s inspired prints and high wasted shorts become trends that suddenly everyone needs in their closet.
Walking into a music festival these days is more like walking into a fashion show filled with maxi skirts, tribal prints, crochet tops and anything reminiscent of Woodstock. Festival organizers and designers have become aware that the fashion and music go hand and hand. Forget commemorative t-shirt stalls. Now, festival goers can go to a booth and buy an original designer piece made specifically for that festival.
That is just what Emily Bargeron, a Georgia Southern University graduate is doing for Bonnaroo. She's the designer behind the growing bohemian chic brand, Mamie Ruth. She makes tapestries out of scarves and earthy mobiles from branches, yarn and
feathers. Bargeron's interns have been raiding Goodwill, tie-dying,
cutting into crop tops and racer backs and adding Mamie swag details, including pom-poms, to vintage t-shirts, giving them new life.
“We made flower crowns and these
cute fringe with benefits, which is basically fringed leather with a leather
tie and you can tie the strand wherever you like – legs, arms, ankles,” said
Agustina Biggio, Mamie Ruth design intern.
She plans to sell the t-shirts at
her festival booth, along with custom made accessories, for a more
affordable price than her typical designs run, said Biggio.
So next time you’re at a music
festival be sure to check out the fashion booths because you just might be
lucky enough to leave with a designer original at a fraction of the
price.
