The concept of the "Red Carpet" was introduced in the year 1961 by the Academy Awards. The crimson red color signifies the height and value of the glamour in Hollywood. Today it's one of the most eye grabbing phenomenon and celebrities walking on the red carpet get all the attention from news channels to gossip sites and movie or fashion enthusiasts.
The fashion scene at red carpet events is always exciting. Some actors try to make an entrance wearing something shocking when others keep loyal to classics (for men it would be a tuxedo and a nice men's dress shirt, for women - floor length or cocktail dress). Some of these outfits get positive reviews, and some get criticized for one or another reason.
A new addition to Red Carpet events is "Behind the Scenes" action. With the development of Social Media, celebrities love to share their perspective of the event from getting ready till the ceremony. That is no surprise to see a well respected actor make a selfie on the red carpet and let's not forget the famous selfie Ellen Degeneres made in Oscars ceremony 2014.
As with every event, there is press and they appoint themselves the job to capture any important and big moment; or to make any moment big! Sometimes it means asking celebrities scandalous questions, sometimes it means just finding out what designer brand has made their clothing or learning the truth is the (weird looking) custom dress shirt designed by the celebrity himself.
However, just because we are treated to a never-ending stream of glam room snippets and product rundowns from the celebrities and their team does not mean that we are getting a complete picture or look at how the star is born.
Classy accessories. Designer shoes. Tailored shirts and suits – Still the only option?
Tailored shirts and tuxedos, classy shoes, and an elegant wristwatches are some of the items that you are used to seeing on your favorite actors. It sure makes them look manly and James Bond-ish. They walk on the red carpet with that million-dollar smile and an attitude that wins over; the spotlight shines on what the male nominees, special guests, and presenters are donning. But times have changed and many actors are now experimenting with their looks on the red carpet and off and that has lead to some exciting outfit choices.
The 'winning look' has become outdated and is no longer associated only with the outfit an actor is wearing on the red carpet. It is now also about the star's grooming and personality that maintains their charm on camera. Even though the choices for clothes have changed for most of the actors fashion still remains one of the main attractions of the red carpet.
Suits are here to stay
Suits and tuxedos worn with perfect fit custom made dress shirts are never going out of style, especially on the red carpet for years to come. Although, times have changed and it encourages actors to experiment and use fashion to promote an idea or a style. The best example is Billy Porter and how he challenged the idea of what is feminine and what is masculine.
Suits and tuxedos have a certain class that adds to the personality of a big star. Celebrities like Robert De Niro or Leonardo Di Caprio are expected to attend big events looking classy in a well fitted tuxedo. We cannot imagine such stars without a tuxedo and a contrasting custom dress shirt on a red carpet. Such is the charm of a tuxedo or a 3-piece suit; it enhances a personality, compliments it, and at the same time, becomes a part of it.
1.Billy Porter
For instance - at the 91st Academy Awards' red carpet, actor-singer Billy Porter broke every conventional fashion norm when he stepped on the red carpet wearing fabulous tuxedo gown. It was a custom design created by Christian Siriano, who also included a tailored tuxedo blazer and a perfect fit tailored shirt to complete the look. It was more than a fashion statement, it was a statement on femininity and masculinity. It was a look that challenged the glamour world's widely-accepted dress code.
BIlly Porter outfit details
Billy Porter rocked the look of a ball gown with a tux on the top and Rick Owens shoes. Rick Owens shoes are popular for gender-bending and what Porter wore was a 6-inch chunky high boot. Billy Porter also wore some fine jewelry of Oscar Heyman, which is famous for gemstones and colored jewels. Porter put effort to make a statement beyond fashion and he managed to get it right too. He walked the red carpet in the fabulous gown and changed into palazzo pants and a tuxedo later for the interviews.
Men in the spotlight
Even this year we saw some of the fan-favorite stars making a fashion statement with their dressing and attitude. While some wore suits, some didn't! Let's have a look at how our favorite heroes dazzled the red carpet.
2.Jason Momoa
The Academy Awards this year was interesting for many reasons and one of them was - the superheroes were in the house including h the Aquaman star - Jason Momoa. Jason Momoa arrived at the Academy Awards wearing a Fendi tuxedo. The tuxedo was special and was designed by late Karl Lagerfeld just for him. The tuxedo was a dusty pink color worn with a white open collar tailored shirt but did not have a bow tie. As a statement piece Jason Momoa used a color coordinated pink scrunchy as a bracelet.
The choice of color was not surprising as we have seen Jason Momoa wearing pink or pink-ish suits to other events as well. However pink is still frowned upon color to wear for men as it is considered a very feminine and soft color.
Not only Momoa rocked the look but also looked extremely confident. In addition, even the material of the tuxedo was made of soft velvet. The entire idea behind the attire helped remove the "new hunk in the town" feel for Jason Momoa. Even though we sometimes still see Jason Momoa as Khal Drogo we have to remember that in real life actors are often extremely different from the characters they play. And Jason Momoa loves a controversial and eye-catching pink look. What can we say – the King of Atlantis swims against the tide again!
3.Michael B. Jordan
The Black Panther star Michael B. Jordan already received praise across the world for his performance as the iconic villain Killmonger in the movie. Jordan wooed the audience with his Louis Vitton Harness in the SAG (Screen Actors Guild) Awards where he looked absolutely stunning and fabulous.
In the Academy Awards, he maintained his reputation with his daring yet sophisticated style choices. Jordan wore a blue velvet tuxedo made by Tom Ford paired with elegant and perfect fit tailored shirt, Piaget watch, rings, and earrings. The look complimented his personality and attitude. The choice of color also plays a role, the color blue is usually associated with simplicity and class.
Michael B. Jordan has a physique that can pull off almost any look. The Tom Ford tuxedo made him look very masculine and classy at the same time. The tuxedo was a perfect blend of both a sophisticated and party attire at the same time.
It is a common trend amongst young celebrity this year - instead of wearing the usual black Tuxedo, these actors try to play with the color, material and sometimes even the design by adding a special detail to their custom dress shirt. The velvet tuxedos are one of the newest trends and quickly gaining popularity.
4.Chris Evans
Chris Evans who played Steve Rogers aka Captain America in the movie Avengers: Endgame made himself noticed at the Academy Awards with his elegant and classy look. Captain America star Chris Evan was seen in an absolutely stunning Salvatore Ferragamo custom tuxedo paired with classic white custom dress shirt. The tuxedo did not just make him look fabulous, it also added more charm to his on-screen character.
Chris Evans' tuxedo choice made him look chivalrous, gentle, and authoritative and very in-sync with his on-screen character Captain America. When Chris assisted Regina King to the stage when she accepted her first Academy Award for "Best Supporting Actress" it really showed that no matter what you are wearing an act of kindness or in this case chivalry will highlight the look and the personality of the wearer.
Chris Evans outfit details
Chris Evans was wearing an IWC watch with his Salvatore Ferragamo tuxedo and perfect fit tailored shirt with Montblanc cufflinks. His attire complemented his already vibrant personality and charm. The choice of color is also noticeable, the jacket was in a light blue, not dark blue, and that made it more distinguishable and suitable with Chris' personality. The IWC watch added elegance and completed the look.
5.Nicholas Hoult
Nicholas Hoult looked very handsome in a head to toe black tuxedo at the Academy Awards. Even though Hoult went with the common and conventional idea of an Award attire, he did not fade or got lost into the background - Nicholas Hoult looked charming like always.
There are styles that will never go out of fashion and a good old black tuxedo (usually paired with white custom dress shirt though) is one of them. It never loses its elegance and is evergreen.
Nicholas Hoult outfit details
Nicholas Hoult wore an all-black Dior tuxedo paired with also black perfect fit tailored shirt which stood out from the rest because of its unique and stylish cumberbund-Esque pleating that was coming from the jacket's inside. It made an intentional but subtle fashion statement, which was praised by many style critics. His boyish charm worked for the look as well and definitely worked as a crowd puller.
6.Rami Malek
You might think that Rami Malek would still be in the skin of Freddie Mercury, the flamboyant frontman, and show up wearing something outlandish and daring. But the Bohemian Rhapsody actor decided to keep it classic and sophisticated with the three-piece Anthony Vaccarello tuxedo, black bow tie and a classic white tailored shirt paired with Cartier watch and cufflinks.
Malek looked absolutely fabulous. It was as if Malek knew that he was going to take the award home and he wanted to make sure that the audience sees him up on the stage, not Freddie Mercury. This is a perfect example of getting out of the skin of a character and reclaiming the original identity of yourself, and how a look can play a big role in achieving that.
7.Chadwick Boseman
A contrasting example here - Chadwick Boseman still felt like T'Challa! That is not a bad thing when a movie meant so much more than being just a superhero flick. Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman made himself seen with the expertly executed and daring style choice for the Academy Awards red carpet.
The look that Boseman chose had an eye catching details as well as elements of a traditional but modern look. Most importantly, it felt like he was still playing the character and the attire enhanced the feel of T'Challa.
Chadwick Boseman outfit details
Chadwick Boseman donned a stunning Givenchy Haute Couture accompanied by the stunning Bulgari jewelry and custom dress shirt. It might have felt that Boseman was still promoting Black Panther, but it surely impressed everyone with its elegance.
8.Henry Golding
You know him from the popular movie - Crazy Rich Asians. We don't know about crazy and rich, but he sure looked like a handsome and stylish Asian! The actor arrived to the Academy Awards Red Carpet wearing a black stylish tuxedo paired with a classic white perfect fit custom dress shirt and looked like a true elite.
Henry Golding outfit details
Henry wore a three-piece Ralph Lauren, Purple Label tuxedo. He executed the look like a pro with a white tailored shirt. The most interesting part of the look was the bow tie - unlike any conventional tuxedo styles, he wore a white bow tie with a white dress shirt instead of a black one. A perfect example of how one can make a common attire look special. It could have been just an experiment, but it surely made an impression that is going to last.
9.Diego Luna
Diego Luna impressed the audience with his performance in 'If Beale Street Could Talk' with Regina King. Although, he was not nominated for an Oscar, but he sure did look like a winner with his gorgeous look.
Diego Luna showed up in the Brunello Cucinelli Italian luxury and Christian Louboutin Parisian perfection. If not for anything else, he surely pulled off a look that is worth an award. Wearing an established look needs an extremely attractive personality to pull that off and thankfully, Luna has it.
10.Trevor Noah
Trevor Noah was another star who went for the common choice for Red Carpets - a black tuxedo paired with white tailored shirt and his look was seriously too good. As we mentioned a black tuxedo will always look good on a good personality and Trevor Noah definitely has one. It was his personality that complimented the Salvatore Ferragamo tuxedo he was wearing. Trevor Noah can go unnoticed as Griot's voice in the movie Black Panther, but with that stunning look he surely stood out at the Academy Awards Red Carpet.
11.Stephan James
You may think that wearing red on Red carpet can make you blend in with the flooring too much but when Stephan James arrived wearing a dark red custom three-piece red tuxedo from Etro paired with a classic white custom dress shirt, you could not help but appreciate and notice his outfit. It was more like a fashion statement which was bold and daring, rather than just looking good. Just a few actors dare to experiment with the color to that extent and just that idea deserves an award!
12.Bradley Cooper
What can one do if he looks good 24/7 without even trying? Bradley Cooper is one of those stars who is handsome in anything a designer throws at him. The actor from 'A Star Is Born' showed up looking sleek and handsome in a classic, perfectly fitted peak-lapel tuxedo from Tom Ford paired with white perfect fit tailored shirt and Christian Louboutin shoes.
