Making Up The Rules

The game-changing life of makeup.

Making Up The Rules
Dominique Hess

Those of you that know me know that makeup is my passion. It is what I love to do. That and nail art. I already talked about nail art, so I think I will go on about makeup for a little while.

Makeup is important to me. I am sure that some people will have watched the video “The Power of Makeup,” which is about how makeup does not define you but how you are defining the makeup.

The thing about makeup is that there are no rules. You could do anything with makeup and look like anyone. People that are really good can make it look like they have an entirely different bone structure about their face. To me, it is incredible what makeup can do. The impact it can have on one person.

Some people ask why I wear so much makeup. And quite honestly I have no real answer; it is illogical. The amount of money that I spend on makeup in one year alone is ridiculous. To me, it is a hobby. One that I might want to pursue as a job in the future. I enjoy doing my makeup. I enjoy doing other people's makeup. I like shopping for makeup, and I like to try new designs and colors. I like to think outside of the box when it comes to my face and that is why I like makeup: because I can do different things with it.

To some people, it is a way of confidence building. They can cover up the imperfections that they see and walk down the street head held high. Like me, others think of it as a way to express themselves, or the self that they want to portray that day.

And there are others still that think makeup is a waste of time or that do not understand how to apply it so they just do not bother. I think the worst attitude to have toward makeup is to say that girls that wear makeup are ugly or are conceited.

Because while, yes, some of us are wearing makeup for fun and are confident enough to go without it. There are others that feel that is the only way they can go out in public. They are so self-conscious of who they are that they cannot even be themselves.

To me, that would be the hardest way to live. Constantly rejecting who you are because of the way you look. It is horrible. Everyone deserves a fair chance. So the next time you see me wearing makeup understand that it is just something I enjoy, but understand we are not all wearing it for the same reasons.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

Blair Waldorf
Stop Hollywood

For those of you who have watched "Gossip Girl" before (and maybe more than just once), you know how important of a character Blair Waldorf is. Without Blair, the show doesn’t have any substance, scheme, or drama. Although the beginning of the show started off with Blair’s best friend Serena returning from boarding school, there just simply is no plot without Blair. With that being said, Blair’s presence in the show in much more complex than that. Her independent and go-getter ways have set an example for "Gossip Girl" fans since the show started and has not ended even years after the show ended. Blair never needed another person to define who she was and she certainly didn’t need a man to do that for her. When she envisioned a goal, she sought after it, and took it. This is why Blair’s demeanor encompasses strong women like her.

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
