Two years ago was the first time I got into the smartphone trend. To quote my mom on something she said two years ago, she mentioned how we should use a device and look towards the future, instead of using the phones we always tended to use. The phones we used up until getting a Samsung Galaxy S4 two years ago can easily be known as “basic.” Because of using phones that are so basic, our choices were unsophisticated until two years ago. Despite how Samsung has had released the Galaxy S5 phone two years ago, we went for the Galaxy S4 as the model was only a year old and cheaper than the newest model.
Using the Samsung Galaxy S4 the last two years has been a breeze. To this day, despite the battery dying after a few short hours and sudden slowness at times, the S4 is still a good and workable phone. Regardless of the apps I have been using, including Pokémon GO, and made phone calls via relay with the Sprint IP app, I never really had a problem with the S4. It overheated sometimes, but never caused any problems.
This June marked two years since getting the Galaxy S4. Regardless of how it is still a good and workable phone, the battery dying so soon and constantly having to charge it was beginning to annoy me. We were eligible for upgrades since June, but had not made any moves yet to determine what could we use next. It was pretty easy to make a decision after seeing various reports of how Samsung’s newest phones, released only this summer, were causing explosions. Not only that, but there is an increased risk of danger if any decision were to be made about purchasing a new phone by Samsung.
Now, I do mention Apple in the title. I’ve been an Apple user since 2010, my junior year of high school, beginning with the 2010 model of MacBook Pro. Since getting the laptop, I have had gotten an iPad 2, the 2015 model of MacBook Pro, and the very first model of the iPad Pro with the Apple Pencil. Unlike using Windows computers, Apple devices has had never failed me; the devices, that I’ve had since 2010 and 2011, lasted for a good four to five years, which is incredible in comparison to Windows computers/devices.
Since seeing various reports about Samsung’s newest models exploding, I quickly made the decision to ask about switching to an iPhone next. The decision came to be easy to make when Apple made their yearly announcements for their newest releases in September. Other than the release of the iPhone 7, Apple Watch Series 2, and macOS Sierra, Apple also announces the release of iOS 10. It was reading some of the newest features that made me driven to make a decision to want an iPhone next.
With iOS 10, Apple has enabled the feature of TTY Relay calling for iPhone users who are deaf/hard of hearing. To learn about this decision left me amazed because Apple was finally releasing things that included more accessibility with their devices. Their newest Watch model includes not only the ability to use it in the water, but also wheelchair movement/rolls (Christmas maybe?)! For possibly the first time as an Apple user, I am pleased to see how Apple is now integrating more accessibility features for people with disabilities.
Apple’s newest release not only made me come to make an easy decision, but also to compare to the accessibility that Samsung phones have. In my Galaxy S4, I have not noticed any accessibility features nor have I noticed any accessibility features with Samsung’s newest models. It was irritating to find that Samsung still remains as an inaccessible company, only to rely on various apps to make the phone more accessible than it already is.
Accessibility is the biggest reason why I chose to make a switch from using a Samsung phone to an Apple iPhone. If I could describe my decision in a pie chart, accessibility would be 50% of the reason; reports of the phones exploding is 25%. The remaining 25% is due to how it makes communication easier in an employment setting.
My decision to want an iPhone is not because I “just want” to have an iPhone, but I have found concrete and legitimate reasons to make the switch. I am looking past the fact that the iPhone, my sister handed down to me, is a year old and more at how it would help to make life simpler.
