Making The Most Out Of Summer

Making The Most Out Of Summer

Summer is upon us. All the children are out of school and the college kids have been out for a month already (unless you're in trimesters, in which case I'm deeply sorry). The beaches are packed, as are the pools. The most important thing you can do with your summer is not stay inside watching reruns of Gilmore Girls.

Be intentional about making plans.

Tell your friends you want to do something, be specific and get a date on your calendar. As a college student, most people will be working their summers away, so make sure you get to spend time with the people you care about.

Work hard.

Sometimes the only job you can get is the cashier at the local grocery store, or maybe you have a well-paid office job. Make sure you make the most out of those daytime hours and work for the money you are getting. There's nothing better than the feeling of depositing your paycheck into your bank account.

Go outside.

I know, foreign concept, right? I am paler than a sheet of paper honestly, but the sunshine is worth it. Use sunscreen (lots of sunscreen) and sit outside with a good book. Another option is finding a lake or body of water and just watching the water. The color blue is calming, and is always a great way to start a day.

Go to the zoo.

It may be packed this time of year, but if you live near a city that has a wonderful zoo. Go visit! Make a day out of it and bring a picnic to eat at a nearby park and go enjoy all the animals you can find. People watching is another excellent thing to do at the zoo! Kids love to imitate the animals (20-year-olds do too). It's a great getaway for a day, and will make you forget all the things you have to get done.

Go on vacation.

I understand not everyone can go to Disney world, but even just a day to a city or campground would suffice. It's important to relax during your summer vacation. School is stressful and there's little time to get off campus, but when you're on summer break it's a little easy to take a weekend away.

Spend time with family.

Living with your family for 3 months straight can get old when you're used to living alone, but this is the only time you have. Make the most of it. I drive to work with my mom every morning and our time is maximized. Luckily, my mom is my favorite person and it doesn't get old, but family time is important!

Have fun.

Do what you want! Go out with friends, go on vacation, and just enjoy yourself. Summer is the time for being happy and having less responsibilities than when you're at school. Make the most of this and make sure you stay hydrated!

Make sure your summer is filled with exciting things that will make you happy.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
