After exams are finished, final papers are turned in, and dorm rooms are packed up, college students head to their hometowns for the month of relaxation called "winter break." After weeks of constant work, late nights and little relaxation the transition from school to home can be difficult. It is strange to not have any responsibilities, a routine or deadlines. Not having anything to do is both a blessing and a curse. I love not having a full plate of work, yet I cannot get used to it. I oftentimes struggle to fill my time while on break as I look for a sense of purpose. We are told to meet deadlines, get good grades, join clubs and all while being independent. However, when final grades are posted, what are we left with?
My first summer home from college was spent figuring out what I like and who I am outside of the academia of Providence College.
For those who are feeling empty and confused because they do not have anything to do, I have these suggestions.
1. Sleep.
Catch up on a semester's worth of sleep that you missed when you prioritized a big exam or an English paper.
2. Spend time with people you haven't seen in awhile.
Parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
3. Do what you love or spend time finding new things you love.
Watch Netflix, read a book for pleasure, eat your favorite flavor of ice cream, play with your dog, go to the mall, bake cookies, etc.
4. Remind yourself that you deserve to be unproductive for a month.
After working nonstop for a semester, we all need a break from the books.
5. Take advantage of all the holiday festivities.
6. Eat all the good food you can.
7. Reflect on the past semester.
Remember, it is only a month. Soon we will be back for another strenuous semester. Appreciate the break while it lasts!
